TCM is frustrating for me. We had it with Comcast (Xfinity) but canned that because of the very high price. We have it on Spectrum internet streaming tv (“TV Choice”), but apparently it is only available when I’m on our home network. It isn’t available remotely when traveling. My TiVo recorded a lot of TCM movies before I shut off Xfinity. I was ready to sell the TiVo box just yesterday when I realized I have a trove of TCM movies on it. I plugged it back in and will watch the movies before I sell it. It may take a while. Criterion and TCM are great services!

A few thoughts. I cannot understand why XFinity charges such a premium for TCM. You are not alone in your frustration. Yes, the Watch TCM app only lets you watch it if you already get TCM on cable or satellite. It primarily shows what is currently showing on TCM for that month. I still like it in case I lose the TCM picture due to thunderstorms (I have DirecTV) and it enables me to find it on the app which I stream with an Apple TV.

Since the Criterion streaming service plays a lot of classic films, some of the TCM fare shows up on that service. The HBO Max streaming app has a TCM "hub", but it is very limited and has way more modern films than TCM usually does.

There are ways to record from satellite and streaming boxes. I use a Hauppauge device which connects between my DirecTV box and my PC. The movies record in HD as they looked on TCM, and I can burn them to blank Blu-ray discs, AVCHD DVD discs or regular blank DVD discs.

I also had strict parents. They must not have known Raquel starred in that movie.

I remember his line in SHOGUN. When offered a boy for sex he proclaims....”DO you take me for a God Cursed Sodomite?”

My memory is not what it used to be, but I think she was on the cover of Life magazine, with a surfboard.

It was the most popular cover of all time.

Thanks for the comments and insights. We completely cut the CATV cord for cable tv. The Sling and Hulu Premium fees are outrageous. I killed Xfinity for the $100/month and don’t need a replacement streaming service for $70/month.

I still subscribe to Netflix DVD and get a lot of classics that way, but their library continues to shrink. I have a lot of films in my Queue, but every ti,e I look, another handful are moved to “Saved” which means they are probably gone for good.

I find I can get a lot of good DVDs and Blu-Rays at the public library. In the worst case, I buy a disk on eBay or Amazon. I just bought the Russian anti war film Blu-Ray “Come and See” because it wasn’t on any streaming service and the library DVD quality was so bad that it was unwatchable. Plus, the subtitles were mushy gray and unreadable.

I didn't see "100 Rifles" until maybe a decade ago! Mom didn't have anything to say about me watching it then (may she RIP).

Sigh!...

I read a review of "Come and See" and it sounded just too brutal. That period of the Nazi occupation of the USSR is nightmarish.

One reason I use an Apple TV for streaming is that I can often use iTunes find digital copies of classic films for low prices. iTunes is always having some titles on sale. I usually check THIS SITE to see what is on sale. I rarely pay more than $4.99 for a movie. They are in HD or 4K and most are at least Blu-ray quality. If I don't want to spend the bucks for a Blu-ray I will look for a digital copy.

“Come and See”

I’ve go that on standard definition DVD. A truly brutal war film. Subtitles on it are just fine.

I tried two different copies of the DVD and both had the subtitle problem: very fuzzy gray words you just can’t read. The Blu-Ray is fine. I think I bought the Criterion restoration. Haven’t watched it yet.

Saw that when I was a kid. I don’t think Uncle Walt would’ve approved of the scene where the evil robot disembowels Norman Bates.

Also saw it when I was a kid. I liked it, still do to this day. It’s a bit of a weird combination of different things, though. It blends 70s style disaster movie tropes with a sci-fi update of 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, but also adds in Star Wars-like shoot ‘em ups and “cute” talking robots.

The funny thing about that disemboweling scene is that there is absolutely no blood or gore in it, which made me confused as a kid what had actually happened to Anthony Perkins’ character.

Thanks for reminding me.

It’s another almost-real live-action Disney my son should see.
