IMPORTANT FROM WASHINGTON: The Recent Change in Mr. Lincoln’s Cabinet; Mr. Stanton Unanimously Recommended for Confirmation (01/15/1862)

WASHINGTON, Tuesday. Jan. 14.

The great excitement of yesterday has measurably subsided to-day, though the probability of further changes in the Cabinet is discussed in a lively manner in all circles. Secretary CAMERON occupied his usual seat in the War Department to-day, and continued to transact business as if nothing had happened. He acts as Secretary of war until his successor is confirmed.

The Military Committee of the Senate, to whom Mr. STANTON's nomination was referred, have unanimously reported him for confirmation, but there was no Executive session to-day, and consequently he is not yet a Cabinet minister. He will undoubtedly be confirmed.

The nomination Mr. CAMERON as Minister to Russia, is approved by Senator TRUMBULL and other Republican Senators. Mr. CAMERON does not care for the position, and will not have his name pressed if he is to run any risk of defeat. Upon the whole, he may choose to try his political fortunes at home rather than abroad.

President LINCOLN designed the nomination of Mr. STANTON as a graceful compliment, as it is a just tribute, to the Democratic party of the North for the prompt and loyal support they have given to his administration in the prosecution of the war for the Union. It is a good investment for his future fame, and the effect is happy here, as it will be everywhere.

The influence of Mr. CHASE is said to have prevailed in the nomination of Mr. STANTON as Secretary of War, but it is not true the bankers have presented any ultimatum on the subject. The entire history of the change was reported correctly in the TIMES, but in no other paper in the country.

The position of Secretary WELLES is this: He recommended the construction of iron-plated ships.
