“Scientist were surprised and had their hopes for a better world dashed when the announcement of the massive fish colony was pounce on by a massive fleet of Chinese fishing trawlers. Icefish are now going extinct.”

Wow, very cool find! Thanks for, posting and searching out these types of articles. I fish a bit, and every now and again come, across a pond where sunfish make nests like those all over the bottom of the shallow ponds- kinda cool to see, and watch the fish defending their nests

So this is what global warming has wrought? Dam! Why oh why didn’t we listen! We’re trying to make species extinct, not over populate!

I was just reading about this! It’s amazing!

“Although most research suggests that the loss of hemoglobin in icefish was a neutral or maladaptive trait that arose due to a random evolutionary event,[27] some researchers have also suggested that the loss of hemoglobin might be tied to a necessary adaptation for the icefish.[27] Most animals require iron for hemoglobin production, and iron is often limited in ocean environments.[28] Through hemoglobin loss, icefish may minimize their iron requirements. This minimization could have aided the icefish survival 8.5 million years ago when Arctic diversity plummeted dramatically.[27]” (from wikipedia)

Their blood is white because it doesn’t have any hemoglobin in it. Also, their cardiac output is like 5 times that of other fish.

The area these science people found was about 92 square miles of nothing but icefish nests. They don’t appear to be very tasty to me, but I suppose a ch1nee would start salivating just at the sheer numbers of them. And those globs of eggs!
