Titled, "I automated my job over a year ago and haven't told anyone," ....
...In their original post, the anonymous IT employee said that they handle all of the digital evidence their employer uses during trials and that when COVID arrived, they requested to work from home. Within a week of working from home, the Redditor said that they wrote, debugged, and perfected a simple script to perform all their entire job for them...
"I clock in every day, play video games or do whatever, and at the end of the day I look over the logs to make sure everything ran smoothly...then clock out," they wrote. "I'm only at my desk maybe 10 minutes a day."...

In other words, you are jealous! Get over it.
C'mon Toad.
The guy is a thief and he knows its because he keeps his script a secret from his company.
He is a nickel and dime thief because if his script is that efficient, he and the firm could market it and make a fortune, not get paid a chump salary to play video games.
Dumber than a pick pocket that steals a wallet and goes to the closest bar and brags about his latest score.
I don't know what is more upsetting, his low life stealing or his stupid approach to life in general.
I’ve worked remotely for >20 years and while i often work 60/70 hour weeks an travel, I also take off whenever I want to if I don’t have conflicts and simply block my calendar
Firm believer if you are accomplishing your goals.quotas/mbos/objectives it shouldn’t really matter when or how much you work
What do I do? Whatever they tell me to do. That's the role of a contractor. If there is nothing to do then I sit and wait until there is something to do. This is not uncommon in large companies. You're not always going to be busy - at least in some roles. They know that. Part of the job is to be ready, willing and able when they need you. If you watch TV or surf the net while waiting around for them to give you work to do, nobody really cares.
I read this and some of the comments.
What strikes me is that this is analogous to innumerous ‘dumb criminal’ stories, yet many here are applauding this dumbass.
smh
One of the work mantras back in my day was, “Work smarter, not harder.”
This guy did exactly that!
Simple enough. Fire the guy...use his program to replace him.
I think you got scammed on this fake story. Most computer professionals fall into the category of exempt from overtime pay. They sign a contract to meet certain employment conditions. I’ve been retired from IT for a few years. Parroting that IT workers can work from home for 10 minutes is totally laughable.
They should absolutely fire him, or
else they should triple his salary, give him a corner office and a company car.
I'll handle this. We feel that the problem isn't with Peter. It's that you haven't challenged him enough to get him really motivated.
Is he being paid for his time, or for his skills/knowledge? If the latter, there is no cheating going on--he is fulfilling the task he was hired to do.
From my perspective, if he can write a single script to perform his position's job, he doesn't have much of a job, and I would not call him "IT"
I work in IT, and I automate parts of my job all the time. That automation has allowed my entire team to focus on other tasks that we are responsible for. (I automated a monthly process that used to take 5 people multiple full-time days every month to complete. I now do it, by myself, in less than 1/2 an hour per month.) That is only one example.
Exactly.
The best IT sysadmins are the laziest people in the company.
But they get the most work done.
Same here.
As a 40 plus year commission sales guy, I couldn't agree with you more.
I loved sales because the ruler was clear, and you were judged on performance, % of quota.
Less than 100%, you were in trouble, over 100% you were in bonus and hours didn't count.
We knew the rules, and the people that exceeded, were heroes and the one that didn't, got fired.
OK with me, but this guy was a schlep, watching routine legal actions, that were so routine and mundane, that this simpleton wrote a script {and then bragged about it} that could replace his income stream.
How damn dumb do you have to be to publicly announce that your yob is superfluous.
I worked countless amounts of overtime and never got paid for it. Was my employer cheating me?
In same position as you and do agree that he was stupid to let this out.
Perhaps not. The law firm in question may be living in the past using inefficient processes that typical law firms automated years ago.
Some inefficient processes exist because they were once the best way to do the job and the company didn’t invest in improving that process. The company’s resources may be better spent on new products rather than older products.
Another thing worth pointing out is that the clever employee might just find himself out of a job at an inconvenient time if some other employee realizes how easily this job can be automated. The clever employee may find that his performance record shows that he lacks initiative and insight and is thus not eligible for rehire.
