IMPORTANT FROM PORT ROYAL: Full Details of the Late Battle at the Ferry; GREAT HAVOC IN THE ENEMY’S RANKS (01/11/1862)

The United States steam transport Oriental, Capt. TUZO, arrived at this port yesterday, from Port Royal, S.C., which port she left on the morning of the 6th inst., at 8 o'clock. Her news is unimportant, nothing of interest having occurred since the sailing of the Vanderbilt.

The mainland was still in possession of Gen. STEVENS, who is awaiting reinforcements. Two regiments had returned to Hilton Head. Gen. STEVENS arrived at Hilton Head, on the 5th, in the steamer Matanzas, from Beaufort, and after transacting some important business returned to his command.

A reinforcement of about three thousand troops had been sent from Port Royal to Tybee Island. Fort Pulaski continued to throw an occasional shot or shell among our troops engaged in throwing up intrenchments. These missiles have all proved harmless, except in one instance, when a shot struck a private, killing him instantly.

A party of our troops had engaged the rebels in a a light skirmish on the mainland, on the 5th inst., during which seven of the latter were captured and marched to Beaufort. While under guard they were extremely unruly, and at one time attempted to effect their escape by beating down the guard and seizing their weapons. Measures were subsequently instituted by Gen. SHERMAN, which will probably prevent a repetition of the experiment.

Transports, conveying troops from the North, arrived weekly.

A reinforcement of 3,500 men had been added to Gen. SHERMAN's force, and it was thought that some important movement was about to take place near the railroad, at a point between Charleston and Savannah.

Large quantities of cotton had been gathered, and at Hilton Head two schooners were loading with the staple, in order to convey it to this City.

Went by the Brickyard Creek Ferry location several times by boat and at least once by car. That is a narrow shallow bit of water at low tide.
