I noticed one of two boats made a run for it, and missed the
brunt impact of the column by a few feet.
Not sure if he even saw it.

Your words reminded me. Mid Pacific during the Viet Nam war, 500# bombs rolled out of a blast hole in the side of the ship and crushed and killed a school mate of mine in a lifeboat.
