Inequality is driving protest against Kazakhstan’s authoritarian government

Why doesn’t the government listen to the complaints of the people until they come out in numbers on the streets?

Kazakhstan’s government, like so many of its authoritarian counterparts, has chosen to wreck its feedback mechanism. It has parlayed considerable funds into a system known as the “state order”, funding media outlets – even those not belonging to the state – to convey news about the government’s policies with a cheery gloss. The few outlets trying to strike out and produce critical coverage face harassment and legal action.

Some issues are absolutely off-limits. In October, one news outlet, Hola.kz, took the liberty of reporting stories made possible by the Pandora Papers leak relating to the former president, Nursultan Nazarbayev (he stepped aside in 2019, but was until this week believed to still wield considerable sway over the running of the country). The website was immediately blocked. The state claimed that it had not banned the website; it was back online 10 days later. Legislation adopted in 2010 made any coverage of Nazarbayev and his family deemed insulting, defamatory or overly invasive an offence worthy of imprisonment.

The Guardian are such liars.

No one who is educated protests against inequality. The protest and rebellion is always against violations of liberty.

Nothing in the article suggests that inequality is driving the protests.

Whoever wrote the article is a decent reporter. Whoever wrote the headline is a political operative.

You could replace “USA” for “Khazakhstan” and “deep state” for Nazarbayev, and the article would still make perfect sense.

Oh yeah.

They are going to try and spin this bad boy like there is no tomorrow.

I have been wondering, if something like that kicked off here who the Government would ask to come in and help.

Probably the Chicoms. I suspect it’s been prearranged. The danger for TPTB is if this kicks off in a lot of places at the same time.

We’re living in the days of the amped-up scribes (the lying Leftist media) and the Pharisees (the established political and social mafia).

Kazakhstan’s government is run by people like Pelosi and Biden.

Well, it was actually run by the Nazarbayev's Family until recently; the Family has immense wealth and connections to Biden all right, as well as connections to Islamists.

While indeed there were some peaceful protests about prices, the main action was a cooperative efforts of well trained Islamist gangs and cooperating people in state security to restore power to the Family. This failed. The Family will likely lose most of its political power and some wealth, and the Big Guy may lose his 10%.

75% of population is Muslim, 25% Russian. One can figure out the problem.

“Legislation adopted in 2010 made any coverage of Nazarbayev and his family deemed insulting, defamatory or overly invasive an offence worthy of imprisonment”

Nazabayev had no better friends than Bill Clinton and at least 2 other former Presidents and their suckup toads, like Cheney. The USA kept this post-USSR regime in power for almost 30 years, and the regime enriched the Clintons, their ‘ friends’ and many US lobbyists and politicians. There is no high horse here.

It’s socialist - only those in charge and their friends live well. Everyone else is the peasant. Not much different than feudalism.

Next we’ll see it’s the price of peanut oil or something.

They just WILL NOT admit that it’s a CIA/EU operation to overthrow the government.

In any case, it’s over now, Putin ended it.

What is driving the protests is the lack of people of color, womyn and LGBTQs at the highest levels of the Kazakh government! Oh, yes, somehow the oppression of the Palestinians by the yahudi must figure into this as well.
