WASHINGTON, Wednesday, Jan. 8.

THE RECENT FIGHT AT PORT ROYAL.

The following letter has been received at the Adjutant-General's office, from Brig.-Gen. SHERMAN, dated: HEADQUARTERS G.C., PORT ROYAL, S.C., Jan. 2, 1862.

SIR: As the Vanderbilt leaves to-morrow, I deem it proper to inclose to you a letter of instructions to Gen. STEVENS, commanding the Second Brigade of this division, of Dec. 30.

The simple object of this dash was to destroy the batteries which the enemy appeared to have erected on the Coosaw River, for the obstruction of the navigation and the passage of that stream, and also to punish him for the insult in firing into the steamer Mayflower on her recent passage through that stream, for the purpose of sounding the depth of the channel. The affair succeeded perfectly, and the enemy were driven out of their batteries, their batteries demolished, and the property found there brought away or destroyed, with little or no loss of life on our side. After the object of the movement was executed, Gen. STEVENS, agreeably to his instructions, returned to Port Royal Island. As soon as his report reaches me it will be forwarded.

The Norfolk Day Book, of Monday, says that on Sunday a saw-mill in the Norfolk Navy-yard was fired by an incendiary. It was, however, extinguished with little damage.

The residence and out-houses of FAYETTE MCMULLEN, in Wythe County, Va., were destroyed by fire on Wednesday morning.

Judge HEMPHILL, Ex-Senator in the Congress of the United States, and since a member of the Confederate Congress, died at Richmond Saturday morning.

Nobody will come forward to take the office of Collector of the War Tax in the Norfolk District, and H.Y. GARNETT, Chief Collector of the War Tax in Virginia, in a formal advertisement,

The Blockade Runner is a great place to stay on the NC coast.

Barely. I’ve racked up over 50k images since then. Mostly posted on WWII or Civil War era.

Yep, it was a different world twenty years ago when we still had dial-up modems that choked with high bandwidth graphics.   The connection would usually drop before the first picture scanned or we disconnected because we got tired of waiting for something to happen.   The newbies haven't a clue.
