Any Freepers ever see a Doors show live? If so, where and what was it like?
November 9, 1968 ST. Louis, MO Kiel Opera House. Morrison came out on stage with a 5th of Southern Comfort. He drank the whole bottle by the end of the concert. After the Concert my buddy & I went out the side exit just in time for their Limousine to stop right along side of us. I was face to face with Ray Manzerek. We were 14 years old.
I would love to have seen The Doors live in concert.
Stoned immaculate.
Wow! That’s awesome. Thanks for sharing. Was it a good show?
I’ve seen enough footage to know I would have left feeling ripped off. I still believe that the Stones at RFK was the worse concert I ever attended, Stevie Wonder was good, but the Stones sounded really baaaad.
We had a pep rally at my high school in 1969 and everybody was promised at the football stadium that the Doors would be there. Well, these kids showed up holding a door in front of them. What a total burn. But funny.
I forgot to add that we had the second most expensive seats, $17.50 each. We pitched hay and mucked out Jim’s Grandpas barn, among other jobs, to earn the money. My Dad took us their and picked us up. This was my first rock concert.
I never cared much for the Doors but I still like LA Woman. How can you have a proper band without a bass guitarist? You can’t.
And Morrison was a dumb ass drug addict. He essentially killed himself. He almost deserved to die.
I went to the mall today and passed through some revolving doors...
I’m three years older than you. Went to quite a few concerts as a teen at the Kiel Opera House, but didn’t see the Doors. It was a great venue! I remember the cool light shows with light being transmitted through colored oils, mesmerizing, pulsating blobs of color. Whoa!
No but I had the opportunity to ask six of the worlds most infamous groupies who the best and worst rock stars were.
For worst : a tie between Jim Morrison and Bono
For Best : unanimously … Huey Lewis
Yes! very good. Years later, about 10 years ago I was telling a group of the neighbors about being there. And Debbi said she rushed the stage and kissed Jim. I asked her if she was the first or second girl to do that, She replied “You were there!” She was the second one. The final song was “Light my Fire” long version.
Never saw them (too young), but in ‘83 my car battery went dead when I was parked in Brentwood listening to The Doors with a buddy of mine and a couple chicks, and I flagged down a guy in a pickup truck pulling into his driveway who turned out to be Doors’ drummer John Densmore. He didn’t have jumper cables but invited us in to call AAA. To make a long story short, we partied with the guy for the next couple hours, playing pool, smoking out of a pipe given to him by Jim Morrison, and listening to unreleased Doors recordings. Great host, great guy. A night I’ll never forget.
Much more of an alcoholic than a drug addict.
"Big Fat Dead Guy In a Bathtub"
That’s an awesome story! Inspired your handle?
Yup. And Muddy.
