Washington, Sunday, Jan. 5.
It is stated very positively that a very high officer of the army has been arrested, to-night, on the charge of being the medium through which the rebels have been constantly obtaining important information relative to military movements. Prominent persons here are understood to be involved in the same affair. The hour is too late to admit of a verification of the story, and I give it on rumor only.
Measures have been taken additionally to guard against the communication of information to the rebels, especially through female agency.
COL. KERRIGAN'S GUILT.
Circumstances in the case of Col. KERRIGAN have transpired within a few days, which fix upon him without doubt, the fact of his having furnished information to the enemy as previously alleged.
WARLIKE RUMORS FROM THE UPPER POTOMAC.
It is reported to-night that a large force of rebels, under Gen. JACKSON, is moving towards Hancock to attack Gen. KELLY's army. It is expected they will attempt to cross the river at some point near Dam No 5. If this intelligence is correct, Gen. BANES' column will have its long-desired employment.
DESERTERS FROM THE REBEL ARMY.
Two deserters from the First Maryland Regiment, and three from a Tennessee regiment, encamped near Union Mills, between Centreville and Manassas, arrived here yesterday. They escaped by the way of Winchester, crossing the Potomac at Dam No. 5. The men were well clothed. They state that the rebel army take possession of everything in the way of commissaries' stores, leaving the owners unsatisfied, and suffering for the common necessaries of life. They have no idea of the number of men, but represent the defences of a formidable character.
