Delivery slowdowns at the U.S. Postal Service take effect Friday, and higher prices are soon to follow. The nation’s mail service is preparing to implement core components of Postmaster General Louis DeJoy’s 10-year plan for the agency, a program designed to cut costs and raise new revenue to fix its many financial problems.
The Postal Service has struggled for years with financial losses due to declining mail use, and the coronavirus pandemic exposed more issues within the agency as it struggled to cope with an avalanche of e-commerce purchases, worker availability problems and a disorganized processing network.
DeJoy, the controversial Trump ally who took over the agency months before the 2020 presidential election, introduced his vision for the agency in March with the backing of the Postal Service’s bipartisan governing board. A major component of that plan — slower service — is set to kick in.
Here’s everything you need to know about the changes at the Postal Service.

We have been driving up and down the hill several times a day since the storm as have our neighbors. I asked a delivery driver who brought medical supplies for my wife who had surgery recently if they had any difficulty getting up the hill. They said no but the abandoned car made it look like it might be difficult.
The mail delivery trucks around here are all chained up. The Amazon delivery truck didn't even look like it had snow tires. None of our neighbors are using chains and most of the vehicles going up and down the hill are 4wd.
So I tried to call the post office. All I wanted to do was go and pick up our mail. Good luck with that... First you can't get through to any one local even after waiting on hold for half an hour. The post office unfortunately is nothing but a giant boondoggle.
I am sorry, I got the author and date wrong on the form.
None of our neighbors are using chains and most of the vehicles going up and down the hill NOT are 4wd.
Higher prices for less service. Only a government bureaucrat would think that is the recipe to save a failing business.
are NOT 4wd
Our mail slowdown seems to have been in effect for months.
The local stuff is still fast, but any out of town mail has been exhibiting at least a few days slower service.
So when people are abandoning your service you should make the service crappier and raise prices. Yeah, that sounds like our government geniuses.
It is a successful proposition if you have a monopoly on the service. I admit that letters, or something like them can be sent on-line, but package delivery is done by the Postal Service, or some entity that has to cooperate with the Postal Service.
USPS is a hot mess
BTW..didn’t they get a huge pay off for colluding to “F” up the election??
The Post Master General was paid more than $400,000 in 2020 and it looks like he will be getting more than that in 2021. One of the only federal employees to get paid more is our beloved Dr. Fauci.
Fix financial problems by making their service worse and more costly to customers.
The one thing that won’t be cut is bonuses for management.
But the USPS was able to make certain that all of the required Mail In Ballots were able to make the 3AM delivery on 4 November, 2020 in various critical cities across the fruited plain.
Yeah.
They need a raise in prices. 2022 Midterms are coming hard and fast.
Be careful with any bill you pay by mail and the requirement is it must be *received* (not postmarked) by the due date. People are going to start seeing late fees if they missed this change to the mail service.
This doesn't make sense to me. "Declining mail use" and "Avalanche of e-commerce purchases" are contradictory.
I understand that many on-line purchases are delivered through other means than USPS, but then why mention it as coping with an "avalanche?"
USPS has been subsidizing Amazon for quite awhile. Just saying.
We still use USPS to mail out certain bills, like our property taxes. Sure, we could have paid by credit card in the past (back in California), but that 3% fee on top of a $10,000+ property tax bill made the price of convenience costly.
The Constitution calls for Congress “To establish Post Offices and post Roads.” I wonder if that allows for multiple postal delivery services, competing with one another. I would think that would result in better service, if properly implemented.
USPS has a monopoly on first class letter service. Others could do it better but aren’t allowed to. Plenty of package delivery services show USPS could do better.
Monopoly gives no excuse for poor service. USPS pays no taxes, has right to every home for delivery. Budget is massive and guaranteed. Still can’t get a letter to me, just outside a major metropolis, within 5 days without charging $30.
Amazon etc ship me packages frequently, showing me live maps when close, within 2 days for a flat $10/month (including video/music/ebook/etc services).
