We are very glad to show you one of the most picturesque towns in Sicily, Sciacca, in the province of Agrigento (south of Sicily). This town boasts a long heritage (it has been founded by the ancient Greeks in the 7th century BC but it was inhabited since the Neolithic) and a wide cultural and artistic richness. Sciacca is not only a beautiful town by the sea. It is known as "the museum of 5 senses" because it represents the link between cultural heritage and territorial identity to be enjoyed with all five senses!Guided tour of Sciacca, Sicily: food, culture and art in one of the most picturesque towns in Sicily | September 2, 2020 | Best Things to Do in Sicily - Round Trip Consulting

Is there a single town in Europe that isn’t steeped in heritage and cultural and artistic richness... and built upon the bones of serfs?

- The search started in 2017, but now, after a six-week dig involving 30 US soldiers under the supervision of archaeologist Clive Vella, the team has unearthed the remains in the locality of Piana Grande in the Sicilian province of Agrigento. The wreck and remains of five servicemen were found nestled in a valley between the towns of Sciacca and Menfi.

Sweet. The Mitchel B-25 is in the top 3 of my favorite aircraft list.

Worldwide, there are more than 81,600 missing U.S. military personnel, including:
72,350 from World War II,
7,550 from the Korean War
1,584 from the Vietnam War
Over 41,000 of the total are presumed lost at sea............

Having done a bit archaeological excavation, myself, I find it curious that this team apparently found humn remains, but
zero dogtags. Those things are nearly indestructible...
Silly me -- I thought those teams worked until they had achieved identification...

Probably one of Lt. Orr's planes. He dropped a lot of them in the Med or the Adriatic. Made it to Sweden though!

- Nestled on a high plain the town of Sciacca is divided into quarters situated on three sloping terraces. The most ancient quarter with its alleys and courtyards can be found in the higher part of the city, from there one enters into the more elegant part of the city with elegant buildings and churches that lead to the potters’ quarter which surrounds the city’s wharf. Next to the city, on Mount Kronio, one finds the thermal baths and can enjoy a panoramic view over the sea. Do not miss the “Enchanted Castle”, an original exhibition of faces sculpted into rocks and into the bark of trees by Filippo Bentivegna.

The dogtags may have been removed by the original team in 1943, and got lost because the guy carrying them subsequently got killed. It’s also possible that they left them behind before their flight.

Silent service losses, plus surface navy losses, account for about half of the WWII total, if memory serves. The Tomb of the Unknowns got its start after WWI if memory serves, because the remains were so mauled by the weapons of that time, and a lot of soldiers were blown to bits leaving no identifiable remains.
