Scientists identify gut-derived metabolites that play a role in neurodegeneration (Change gut bacteria and diminish MS)

A research team has found high levels of three toxic metabolites produced by gut bacteria in the cerebrospinal fluid and plasma samples of multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. The findings further scientists' understanding of how gut bacteria can impact the course of neurological diseases by producing compounds that are toxic to nerve cells.

Previously published evidence has supported the concept that an imbalance in the gut microbiota—the community of organisms that live in the human intestines—may underly a range of neurological disorders.

"Our findings suggest that MS patients' gut bacteria produce and release large amounts [of] p-cresol-sulfate, indoxyl-sulfate and N-phenylacetylglutamine into the bloodstream, and they eventually reach the cerebrospinal fluid," said Hye-Jin Park. "Once there, these toxic metabolites bathe the brain and spinal cord, and potentially play a role in the destruction of the myelin sheath that protects nerves."

Samples were taken from patients before and after treatment with the disease modifying therapy dimethyl fumarate (DMF), which has been reported to have a profound effect on reshaping the gut microbiome of MS patients. The analyzed data allowed researchers to identify an abundance of the three toxic metabolites in MS patients not treated with DMF compared to healthy individuals. They also noted a reduction in the metabolites following treatment with DMF.

"The presence of high levels of these toxic metabolites also correlates with biomarkers of neurodegeneration in MS patients, and with the ability to impair neuronal function of cultured cells in the laboratory," said Achilles Ntranos, lead author, where a second set of samples was collected from MS patients.

"This is an exciting and significant discovery," said Patrizia. "This work not only furthers our understanding of the role of gut-brain communication in neurodegenerative disease progression, but also provides a potential metabolic target for develop new MS Therapies."

They used a drug that greatly changed the gut bacteria, while alleviating MS symptoms, but it would seem that a major change of diet or heavy use of commercial probiotics could also shift the gut bacteria quite a bit.

MS is mysterious as far as I know. I’ve known several people who’ve been diagnosed with it. Purely anecdotal, but they seemed to have a number of factors in common: women, smokers, thinner than average, approx. late 30s when diagnosed

Autoimmune diseases remain the Land of Mystery. MS is one.

Interesting list. I've also been told that there's an association with latitude and travel.

All boils back down to LEAKY GUT and imbalanced microbiome

And what causes this?

A normal poor diet deficient in nutrients and minerals and prebiotics

Also antibiotics and anything else that kills off gut bacteria, particularly your good bacteria you want

the typical medical establishment never discusses food in terms of healing you, helping your gut bacteria, making it a better environment for them, and actually using food as part of a way to improve your health

also they never prescribe or encourage probiotics and prebiotics after antibiotics have been used and decimated your gut bacteria

“probiotics”

Worthless. Absolutely worthless.

This story illustrates the pathetic bias of our medical system, ignoring decades of doctors’ treatments - for which they all were branded pariahs - which clearly framed the effects of harmful dysbiosis of the gut (and those of the pathogenic byproducts they create).

There will NEVER be a single pill or elixir to resolve gut problems and the sooner anyone with abnormal gut symptoms begins to comprehensively address their gut, the better their health will be in the long term WITHOUT derelict medical advice and post-symptom intervention (the last place anyone wants to be).

If anything, this ‘pandemic’ may have been a catalyst for a dramatic shift in our medical system...but it will take generations to resolve. People need to act now, not wait for the next ‘diet’.

Find a Naturopath and get a consultation; you’ll thank me eventually.

did they say what types of food promoted the bad gut bacteria and their metabolites?

No, they went straight to the toxic metabolites and noted they were only made by greatly elevated bad gut bacteria.

There is a strange symbiosis we have with gut bacteria. If your current diet is providing provably bad outcomes, a major diet change is needed.

It’s impressive that it was found as a direct issue (and possible cause) for effectively all MS sufferers.
