I-95 is impassable for 50 miles from Dunfries, in NoVa, south to Carmel Church. That stretch is quite hilly so one can understand the ice and snow reeking havoc. I once had an experience like that getting stuck in a car for 8 hours trying to cross the Poconos in Pennsylvania on I-80.

I saw that on TV

I am from Buffalo, and I thought “they closed the road for THAT..???” That’s a typical morning commute here

I’d bet they don’t use snow tires, which makes driving on snow covered roads stupid.

“some people were seen abandoning their vehicles in snow-covered travel lanes, walking down I-95 to parts unknown,”

They’ll find them...in the spring.

I’m confused, why are they referring to Fallout from Man Made Global Warming as “snow”?, Everybody knows that the “
Science” says SNOW IS IMPOSSIBLE in our Heated World, so what is the white stuff covering the ground, if not FALLOUT From Global Warming??

That section of I95 has huge traffic jams even in perfectly clear weather, on weekends.

The only alternative routes are US1, and some two-lane country roads with no shoulders, and lots of curves and hills.

The new governor is to be sworn in on January 15.

Looks like that miserable Northam is being a deliberate jerk.

When will people learn to stay home since you can't get there anyways.

They don't have the equipment to deal with this. Why not?? It does happen every year.

If I-95 is messed up an alternate might be Route 1 going south. But I am guessing that is also in bad shape.

If this traffic jam happened in Florida - DeSantis would have food and water sent out to drivers.

Here in Louisiana when the interstate is closed due to an accident, the interstate is blocked off and traffic is rerouted so there is no helpless accumulation of cars. Just basic common sense.

It's a worsening formula:

Government financial mismanagement for decades
+
Poorly designed and overburdened infrastructure
+
Atypical weather event
+
Poor weather reporting
+
Insufficient and under-skilled staff
+
Non-thinking drivers
=
Drivers stuck in cars for hours on an unplowed highway, or drivers abandoning their cars

Virginia DOT needed to plow the road or close it. No government employee will suffer any consequences for this fiasco.
