Bellwether's gorgeous Volar eVTOL begins flight testing at half-scale

The Bellwether Volar: a flying hypercar for private ownersBellwether Industries VIEW 13 IMAGES

The UK's Bellwether Industries has built and flown a half-scale prototype of its stunning Volar eVTOL, and is preparing to release footage. It's the most brazenly futuristic design we've ever seen, a flying hypercar for a utopia even sci-fi doesn't dare dream up.

I mean, look at the thing. It looks like it's doing 200 miles an hour sitting still. The lines are graceful, even sensual. The profile razor-sharp. The slanted louvers give it a rib cage and warn of frightening velocities. The stubby vee of the tailfins evokes the threat of a fighter jet, but the layered bodywork and its sumptuous, gleaming finish tell us this is a design of peace, hope and ambition.

This is a design to stir the imagination and the passions. You can picture it knifing into a cloud bank, leaving gently swirling vortices of vapor as the only calling card of its silent visit. You can see it gently touching down on an impossibly high-rise vertipad, its sleek glass roof retracting to let a lady and a gentleman out, dressed for the opera and right on time.

A stunningly-designed flying supercar for a sophisticated and genteel utopian future A stunningly-designed flying supercar for a sophisticated and genteel utopian futureBellwether Industries It's not only the most beautiful eVTOL concept we've ever seen, it might be the most beautiful we're likely to see for a long time. So take one last magical gaze through the image gallery before we look any closer, eh?

And are typically unfit for the perfomance.

Better they drive a Priaps that they can keep up with mentally and physically.

For such a vehicle to work, there needs to be a huge volume of air being projected downward.

Unless helicopter blades pop out from this thing prior to take-off, I’m not seeing it working at all, as displayed. The vents look barely large enough to do engine cooling, let alone provide lift or control.

Flying cars...
Brings to mind that old expression about “sliding down a banister and having it turn into a razor blade half-way down”...

Not everyone is cut out to fly. Gravity and physics are cruel masters who care not one whit about someone’s feelings. Flying an aircraft is one of the most no-bullshit things you can do.

They’ll make up the lack of area with velocity, making for 250 mph rocks and sand coming out from under it.

Its why the picture I posted above of it landing on a beach is so clueless.

"...I can only imagine the carnage, cadavers and debris raining down..."

"As God is my witness, I thought idiots could fly!"

(That said, I'll take one.)

"...where you gonna put two kids, a stroller and a weeks worth of groceries?"

That is what the external sling hook is for!

Yer giving the cell phone pilots a way too much credit——This is just another reason I have a backup plan to put fender guns on all my trucks. When I travel a “moron a mile” has gotten to be optimistic. They kill themselves about one per week on the 130 miles of perfectly straight road that goes by my house. Taking on a Kenworth is their favorite but there’s also rolling in the sagebrush, shooting a gully, rearender tag, and failure to yield the road to someone who is actually moving. And then there’s deer, cows, elk, horses, bears, coyotes and any number of choice target to dodge while suiciding.

Hahahahaahah, now that made me LITERALLY LOL!

We had six kids in our family, and my poor mom in the station wagon would get so tweaked with anger that she would accelerate the vehicle (back in the Sixties) and would take the car hurtling down the highway until we all screamed in terror (I think she must have taken it up to 100 mph or more, because 80 mph was her default, I think) and she would scream at us “I’M NOT SLOWING THIS CAR DOWN UNTIL YOU BEHAVE!” and she would reduce us to quivering, tearful blubberers!

Sigh. I miss my mom...she sure was a pistol! Crazy sometimes, but never boring!

Never trust an “autopilot” in the 5G era.

You could have 22 of those flying cars for the price of this one:

I think any appropriate licensing test would eliminate all but a very few individuals. Could one in a thousand pass? One in a million doesn’t seem out of line.

Only one autopilot needs to pass. Then it can be duplicated a million times.

Is it a combustion engine or are they going electric? Would love to see how the elites handle environmental questions while tooling around in a 2 million dollar “gas powered” vehicle.

Is there a Sidewinder missile option?

Just saying...would be kinda neat to have that.

This sort of vehicle is electric-only.

Meh. I whip up stuff like that all the time with SubD surfacing. (Not so much anymore since I mostly avoid aircraft engineering now). It is a pretty shell on another scaled up drone. I have been asked to work on a dozen of similar projects.

What I find funny is they are playing the “GREEN” fantasy angle. While saying we have to save the planet and showing how horrible public transportation is, they are cashing in on the GREEN frenzy so people can isolate themselves from the unwashed masses on public transportation. That’s the game though. That’s where the investment dollars come from.
