Incredibly, subjects who got flu shots in the 2010-2011 flu season and prior/2009-2010 season had a negative VE, e.g. Higher rate of infection.

As stated in an accompanying editorial,

Remarkably, the rate of... influenza illness was not substantially different between those subjects who received influenza vaccine and those who did not.... The second surprising finding is that receipt of influenza vaccination in a previous season may have impacted the effectiveness of the vaccine in the current season. The population under study was predominantly young healthy adults and children with a low frequency of chronic health conditions, the types of subjects that typically mount the best immune responses to vaccine... the apparent failure of influenza vaccine under optimal conditions seen in this study is indeed troubling.

Perhaps this offers some insight into the longer-term help (or not) of successive COVID19 boosters.

The fall season before the first Covid vax was available used to be a massive push for the flu vax for that season.

You could get a free flu vax during the last week in September from the comfort or discomfort of your drive through vehicle.

My wife and I had cracked the code re the Flu Vax and its rapid diminishing effectiveness after you got the Flu Vax.
