Angelotta, 43, worked at a ski shop at the Northstar California Resort and told friends he was going skiing before meeting them for Christmas dinner, the Sheriff’s Office said.

His ski pass was last used Saturday morning on a lift.

Over six days, 220 people from 17 agencies and rescue organizations searched for him using skiers, snowmobiles and a helicopter, the Sheriff’s Office said.

“The search conditions included high winds, whiteout conditions, overnight temperatures in the teens and over seven feet of new snow since the beginning of the search,” the agency said.

The same thing happened almost 23 years ago at Bear Valley, CA. Dr. Katherine Wong didn’t show up, a huge search operation couldn’t find her, and her bones were discovered four months later a half mile out of bounds in rugged terrain.

It happened again in March 2018; that skier’s body was found in May that year.

Wow, close call. Tree wells have killed MANY a skier. The worst is suffocating in fresh, fluffy powder.

Usually the bone fragments are found scattered over a wide area.

” Don’t even ASK me what they made us do with the rabbits we trapped. Ugh!”

LOL…My nephew took the USMC Mountain Warfare training program at the center in California a decade ago. They had to capture a mountain goat and eat it raw to survive. The woman in their platoon just could not do it. I’m not sure if they let her starve, just laughed at her, or if she washed out of the Corps after that.

Why don’t they issue GPS trackers for slopes that have a risk of getting lost?

I’m sure someone had warned me of tree wells before the incident, but I had no respect. It is a natural trap. The sun beats down between snows on a south face. You go to make that last powder turn before the tree and that is when you hit heavier snow, catch an edge and flip right in.

In my defense, I was a ‘City Kid’ back then. But, I did what was asked of me.

And now, I raise my own beef and butcher with the best of ‘em when Beau gets a deer or a black bear. ;) I’ll eat anything that doesn’t eat me first.

Well, except rabbit, LOL! And, I don’t like squirrel; I’ve never been hungry enough I guess. ;)

Okay, that is really funny but as a skier I find this news really tragic. For the past few days my wife and I were hoping for news that he was found safe. Have skied many times at Northstar. Horrible way to die if it was tree well or avalanche. Still that was funny and I will save it and show it around. Lesson learned. Don’t ski alone and definitely don’t hold up a bear cub for a selfie.

That’s why I use a PLB or Personal Locator Beacon.

SPOT is what I’ve used for 15 years and it emails cookie crumb trails to my friend and brother as I do dumb things like go off trail when hiking or snowboarding.

Even funnier because bears should be passed out until spring.

I go off the back of Alpine Meadows and down the front slope at Heavenly

Having worked at Sugar Bowl on Donner summit for several years in the early 80’s, I’ll concur on the tree well. It happens, even to the most experienced.
Never ski alone off trail.
We pulled a flat lander out of an off trail tree well several days after the March ‘82 dump. Disney side skiing solo in the trees.
Upside down and scared shtless, but not outta luck.
Random stop for us and just happened to hear the screams.
Our liquor stores increased significantly the next day.
