The steam transport Empire City, Capt. BAXTER, from Beaufort Dec. 24, and Port Royal Dec. 25, arrived at this port yesterday morning.
The Empire City discharged her cargo at Beaufort' and is, without doubt, the largest vessel ever at that place. When coming out of Port Royal she came through the southeast channel, which has recently been buoyed out, and found not less than thirty feet water in any part.
Nothing of special importance had transpired at Port Royal since the sailing of the Baltic.
Large quantities of cotton had been gathered and stored in the Government warehouses. In one day, six large wagons, filled with loose cotton gathered in the vicinity of Hilton Head, pulsed through the place to the warehouse.
Workmen are engaged in building another wharf.
The negroes continue to come down in great numbers. Many of them are very well dressed, having supplied themselves with their masters' best clothes. One negro remarked to an officer of the Empire City that his master was in such haste to run away from Beaufort, that he took off his coat and threw it upon the ground. It soon after adorned the shoulders of his sable servant, who was standing by and witnessed the transaction.
A portion of the Seventy-ninth Regiment had made a reconnoissance, about 15 miles from Beaufort, on the 20th December, and captured six rebels at a place called the Brick-yards.
At Tybee Island, the troops were still engaged making intrenchments, while Fort Pulaski kept up a continual fire on the island, but had done no damage. The work on the intrenchments is prosecuted with vigor. They are situated about half a mile from Fort Pulaski and will soon be ready for occupation.
