'We Were Terrified': Bay Area Surfers Chased by Unusually Aggressive Shark
KSBW ^ | Dec 29, 2021 | Dec 29, 2021

Two surfers were recently chased by a shark while surfing along North Salmon Creek Beach, just north of Bodega Bay, the Press Democrat reported. The incident took place Dec. 22, just a few days before the fatal shark attack that happened off the coast of central California on Christmas Eve.

“Holy crap, we were terrified because it was not backing off,” Sebastopol resident Timothy Reck told the newspaper. He says he and the other surfer escaped the shark aggressively pursuing them, but only after it bit onto the leash of one of their surfboards.

Experts, however, say violent shark encounters are rare. There have been about 200 shark encounters along the California coast since the 1950s, and only 15 of these were fatal, according to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Fish and Wildlife pelagic fisheries manager John Ugoretz told the Press Democrat that the shark that chased Reck may have been a young adult learning to feed.

After Reck's shark run-in, lifeguards cleared people from the water at North Salmon Creek Beach and posted shark warning signs. Reck's was not the only shark sighting on Dec. 22 — another surfer, Nate Buck, also told the Press Democrat that he saw a shark in the same area only a few minutes after Reck did. It is unclear whether these were different sharks, although both describe seeing a 10- to 12-foot-long animal.

Shark warning signs stayed up for 24 hours, but since then, conditions have returned to normal at North Salmon Creek Beach.

Yes. Sharks are peaceful, lovable creatures. Friendly as a Labrador retriever. They just want a pat on the head.

High quality cinema, with John Schneider and Jimmy Walker even -

My apologies in advance, and yes, I did actually watch the whole darned thing last week for some silly reason.

How do they know this shark was unusually aggressive?

Maybe he was being unusually horny and just wanted to be close.

Even the sharks know they won’t be prosecuted in the Bay Area.

Nobody ever has a problem with a shark, until they do.

Everybody here is assuming the shark was a him. Check your privilege. This shark may well be raging against the patriarchy. The surfers were all guys after all.

Who doesn’t love experts.

For the surfers, an incident like that isn’t rare. It’s all too commonplace.

For anybody bitten by a shark, that expert opinion is of no solace.
