WASHINGTON, Saturday, Dec. 28.

THE SETTLEMENT OF THE TRENT DIFFICULTY.

The settlement of the Mason-Slidell case by the surrender of the prisoners to-day, is the universal theme of conversation in Washington. In army and Administration circles, the result gives great satisfaction. Government forbade the transmission of a single line on the subject by telegraph last night, although the entire correspondence was in the office of the National Intelligencer, set in type, to be published to-day. The reason assigned was that this was a more signified mode of giving expression to a National decision than the hot haste of the telegraph and daily Press. There were those who interpreted the purpose of the Government differently, and ascribed this caution to a desire to remove MASON and SLIDELL safely from Fort Warren to ship-board before promulgating the fact of their intended release.

It was expected that there would be a very inflammatory outburst in Congress on the surrender of SLIDELL and MASON, but the publication of M. THOUVENEL's dispatch changes the aspect of the case materially.

Intelligence received by the America's mails, states that the Americans on the Continent are rapidly arriving at Paris, on their return home -- fearing that if they protract their stay, they may be unable to leave at all. The current impression at Paris was, that in case of a war between the United States and Great Britain' France would unite with the latter Power, and this apprehension was generally shared by Americans abroad.

Yesterday three regiments of Gen. WADSWORTH's Brigade, accompanied by a reserve of two regiments of Gen. ANGUS' Brigade, proceeded on a foraging expedition to within a mile of Fairfax Court-house. They returned with 80 loads of forage. To-day another expedition, from the same brigade, proceeded to the same neighborhood,

The prose that was used in 19th century newspapers would be indecipherable to the average high schooler of today.
