Looks like a cubic zirconium. Yes, but likely much more expensive.
I did a small amount of consulting on problems in the J Webb Telescope development. Probably added to delays, but it was unavoidable.

You said NASA and overseeing in the same sentence. If you said NASA and writing a decent specification for the contractors (who do the work) then that would be even more ridiculous.

Very exciting! Unfolds like an origami flower a million miles away. 100 time as powerful as the Hubble - in infrared. Too cool.

A good friend of mine owns a precision machine shop in California. A few years ago a team of engineers set an appointment with him and brought in a set of plans for some complex mechanism with exact specifications. It is an important unit inside this telescope.
His whole family is watching this with great interest. What a cool mark on his history as a machinist.
