Earlier this year The War Zone exclusively reported about a series of 2019 incidents that involved unidentified drones stalking US Navy vessels over several nights in the waters off of Southern California. Our initial report also covered the Navy’s investigation into the incidents, which appeared to struggle to identify either the aircraft or their operators. Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Michael Gilday later clarified that the aircraft were never identified, and that there have been similar incidents across the service branches and allied militaries.
Newly released documents obtained via the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) show that the full scope of these drone incursions was greater than it initially appeared, and they persisted well after the Navy’s investigation was launched. Deck logs indicate that drone sightings continued throughout the month of July 2019 and included events where drone countermeasure teams were called into action. One notable event involved at least three ships observing multiple drones. Uncharacteristically for unclassified deck logs, the details on this event are almost entirely redacted.
Among the new documents is the map seen below that details the interactions between a drone (denoted on what appears to be a briefing slide as an unmanned aerial system, or UAS) and a Navy Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, the USS Paul Hamilton.
The map depicts Paul Hamilton making an abrupt right-hand turn while a drone closely follows the ship. The legends and annotations of the map have been redacted under FOIA exemptions that apply to technical data that have military applications. Though the title of the document reads July 17th, the map appears to refer to drone encounters that occurred in the incidents on July 14th and July 15th.

Minigun. Me likely. I had a t-shirt years ago with a picture of one with “GE. WE BRING GOOD THINGS TO LIFE!” under the pic.
Are they even launched? This implies they are indeed some technology. But what if they aren’t launched, as we think of? What if they are materialized, or fly all the way around the world, or come from the secret Nazi base on the dark side of the moon or under the Antarctic icecap? Sounds crazy, but the whole phenomenon—AS REPOTERD—seems crazy. Maybe the reports are what is actually bogus...
What if they are “alive” and we’re just now finding out? Others have said they might even be other-dimensional objects that inadvertently crossed over into ours.
But the statement from the admiral makes me think he wants to say they’re Chinese or Russian or some other adversary of ours and our allies.
Are they going to ask for funding to address these things?
Somebody is either screwing with them from along the California coast or they're being launched from submarines.....
Would sure like to know what was being redacted.
Around here, and in upstate New York, we occasionally see very sophisticated flying objects that form V shaped attack flight patterns, and then after some form of communication they rapidly descend into cleared corn fields to refuel. Sometimes hundreds of them gather for the night, and then launch sorties of small numbers that search surrounding areas, or join formations with similar looking flying objects.
Some researchers believe they come from north of the US border, and that they can fly under radar. Some other researchers believe that they are self replicating, and use a complex process to generate new versions of themselves.
Off the coast of New England people operating boats have observed similar flying objects that appear from nowhere and follow their boats for some time. Those flying objects have extraordinary maneuvering ability, and seem to be able to detect boats throwing fish overboard from many miles away.
I can’t believe that our Navy is so stupid that they let them fly around their ship with out shooting them down.
Sounds like free emp testing to me
> I watched the radar techs knock all the pigeons off a hanger that way. From about a mile away.
We used to do that with the ranging lasers on M-1s back in the 80s. Strictly not allowed from the motor pool, but it happened anyway.
Why don’t the swabs put away their sex-change paraphernalia and shoot them down with their anti-aircraft missiles?
Just Chinese People’s Navy trying out their new toys. When war comes California will be hit hard—San Diego, LA and SF will be bombed and burned—LA will look like Berlin 1945. No nukes—just conventional weapons. Edwards AFB and USN Port Hueneme will also be in the cross hairs. Seattle and Hawaii will also be hit. Before the attack—the power grid will comedown and all internet put out of action. Rumor and Propaganda will replace news. The war will be won or lost in the first 72 hours.
USN had better find an efficient way to dispose of the drones rapidly. Drones are the future of warfare insofar as future involves the uniformed military. A lasaer weapon might be the ideal response
Whole thing stinks.
“Or did they just wring their little hands?”
The captain would not clear them to fire, it might upset some minority protected class to shoot them down.
The apparitions of interest aren’t corporeal objects.
They've contracted out blimps to flash messages such as "Better Call Saul" and "1-800-NAV-CRASH".
I’m of the mind that they are from one or more previous civilizations that left the Earth to avoid an impending cataclysm, like the one that happened in 10,600 BC. They are just keeping watch and generally fooling around.
I do not buy they belong to any power on Earth, unless they are allied ; any of their tech would be strictly controlled and bad actors would be rather quickly sorted. IMHO
Wait until the Navy starts mounting lasers on DDG’s. Maybe they’ll bag a few aliens?
That none of these destroyers have taken anything more than evasive action suggests to me that the CO & XO have been ordered to remain passive and allow their crews to react within those limits. And THAT tells me that the UAV’s belong to us and this is some sort of elaborate test.
If they can’t maintain a radar lock then the Standard or Sea Sparrow is just going to go ballistic (ie. ‘miss).
