An Alumnus Story: Going Home, and Finding Woke
National Review ^ | 12/08/2021 | Robert Agostinelli

Recently, I went home again, to Rochester, N.Y. It had been a while, but, venturing back for family reasons, I took the opportunity to visit my high-school alma mater, Aquinas Institute, from which I graduated in 1972...

Long held in high regard locally, Aquinas is a Roman Catholic school founded over a century ago, named after, and based on the teachings of, the learned saint, the “Angelic Doctor.”

While a student there, I had the singular good fortune of being mentored by Bishop Fulton J. Sheen. Famous for his national television show, Life Is Worth Living, the great patriot and faith-propagator was then serving as head of the Rochester diocese. Bishop Sheen had an iron-trap mind and a disciplined way that awakened me to the body of our JudeoChristian values and inspired me to seek excellence in it...Complementing this giant of faith, Aquinas Institute became the platform of my personal formation and predicate sense of right and wrong — indeed, it gave me a moral compass by which I have aspired to live my life.

God, family, and country were the daily mantra of Sheen and the values espoused by Aquinas.

I have very much avoided National Review since the Covington scandal, but this is a worthy piece. We really see now that the rot runs throughout and reaches to the highest rungs of our society.

Don't know what to do, but just know doing must be done.

May G-d save America, we are really in a mess right now.

The pope is a commie. The fish rots from the head first.

This piece isn’t about the pope.

Rochester’s Catholic schools were amazing. We couldn’t afford Aquinas, but I’m thankful for Holy Rosary School for the foundation of my life as a Christian. And for the teachers and nuns that kept all of us kids on the right path.

Occasionally a Freeper will post that conservatives should send their children to private schools.

Sorry, but nearly all the teachers in this nation ( this includes private schools) were trained by Marxists in Marxist-run universities.

The rot of education ( K-12 and university) is like termites gnawing quietly at the foundation.. It is fundamentally among the most serious threats to our freedom.

Freedom will be lost in the voting booth.

“No, but the fish stinks from the head down.”

True enough, and I loathe Francis and am happy I’m not a RC anymore, so he’s not really my problem. Because if I were still RC he would be a BIG PROBLEM.

But, I don’t think the intellectual and spiritual rot going on at this formerly excellent school is the fault of the Vatican. I think this is homemade in the USA.

It’s very heartbreaking all this stuff that is happening. My kid was in Salvation Army daycare for years, they get a lot of credit for how good she turned out. The people there really loved Jesus, you could just see it. She was one of only a handful of white kids in the place, this was never an issue, there was never the hint of an issue.

Now look at what’s happened to them!

Hubby and I have been saying we never thought we’d see this country like this. And he and I don’t totally agree on Politics or Religion. (Or anything really! Just kidding!)

But we’re afraid, afraid for our nation, afraid for our grandsons.
