The #MarsHelicopter keeps going, going, going! Ingenuity successfully completed its 18th flight, adding 124.3 seconds to its overall time aloft on the Red Planet. It flew 754 feet (230 meters) at a speed of 5.6 mph (2.5 m/sec) & took images along the way. http://go.nasa.gov/2U43zuH
Must it return to a fixed base for solar recharging or can it fly-hop along a long path, recharging as it goes? If it can’t continue moving in some direction....well, it’s neat but the prospects for discovery seem limited.
But not bad for a first generation Mars ‘copter, eh?
It recharges itself - it has a solar panel that sits atop its helicopter blades.
This version has communication equipment that only talks to the Perseverance Rover, and not to the various satellites orbiting Mars (who in turn, transmit that data back to Earth.
Therefore it has to stay within a certain range of Perseverance, so it can receive its commands and transmit its data (including images) back to JPL on Planet Earth.
I was under the impression it was a proof of concept thing...
I think the ability to scan a large area around and in front of Perseverance is of significant value, plus the proof of concept that it works means all future missions will likely include a drone, maybe even a drone as the primary payload.
Yes. Hopefully future missions will have several more advanced drones that can quickly explore the surrounding area. Great proof of concept and advancement of aviation in this effort!
Yes, that is impressive on all counts. Future models, built with the knowledge gained on these proving runs, will no doubt be well enhanced.
I've been busy, but really wanted to get back to the word (and wording) in the tweet about Ingenuity's successful 18th flight.
Psalm 119 (English-Hebrew) was first thing that came to mind beforehand, on the morning of the update. It had appeared out of the blue, not relating to any current study, so at that time I had wondered why.
Specifically, I had been contemplating the following details that are in the center of this acrostic Psalm, which is the longest chapter in the Bible -- 176 verses, 8 verses for each Hebrew letter in their order. 8 x 22 verses:
The center (verse-wise) is between the end of verse 88 and the beginning of 89, where the "kaf" verses switch over to the "lamed" verses.
Because they are the letters in the center of the alef-beit, kaf and lamed are the "atbash" of each other. Forward, they spell kol [כל], "all". In reverse, Lech! [לך], the command to go, as in Gen 12.1 where God told Abram to "Giddy up and ride, boldly ride"*, so to speak.
88, the last "kaf" verse, also ends with a kaf. Thus in the exact place of the switchover to the "lamed" verses, Lech! appears in reverse (as that particular kaf is in its final letter form). A kaf and a lamed add up to 50.
Letter-wise, the center of the Psalm is located in the first word of verse 89, on the second lamed of laolam, "for ever". Laolam [לעולם] has a sum of 176, the number of verses in the Psalm.
88. In your loving kindness spare my life; so I shall keep the testimony of your mouth [פיך]:
89. [לעולם] For ever, O Lord, your word is fixed in heaven:
Into English, an initial kaf is transliterrated into a K, and any lamed to an L.

Then later on that day, the Ingenuity update was posted for flight 18, the number that relates directly to chai [חי], "life".

To my surprise, the link at the end of the tweet went to an updated flight log (sometimes they go to a status update article). Often, that flight log isn't updated for many days. I don't pay mind to the airfield changes in any case. Usually.
For flight 18, though, Ingenuity had traveled from Airfield K to Airfield L, which went a long way in explaining that sudden memory about the center of Psalm 119, because it moves in heaven from "Airfield" K to "Airfield" L at the time of life; i.e.the place of laolam, of "going, going, going" on forever.
I just had a thought about Phil Connors. Remember what a great piano player he became? That's because once he decided to get busy living, he could start the same day anew, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed on account of his eagerness to build upon previous learning and accomplishments. His piano teacher was so proud of him.
As such, the blessing to Judah also came right to mind, in particular the verse much analyzed for its unusual and confounding word translated as "red". It is some kind of mysterious dark flashing of the eyes.
Gen 49.12. His eyes shall be red with (from) wine, and his teeth white with (from) milk:
Figured I should check back up on it.
חַכְלִילִי
Well now, I can see that it's all in there -- all [כל] life [חי] for me [לי].
The verse, from my perspective at least, isn't cryptic at all. It's the perfect description of a man with sparkling eyes filled with "wine" (the secret, to life), having a spring in his step and a smile on his face that could light up a room from the brightness of his teeth, because the Spirit of God had been turned on and let loose.
This has already been demonstrated by the woman on this 124-second video. You can see that certain sparkle kick in at the 15 second mark, and it takes off from there. The banjo player even looks like he's bouncing on Flubber. (The poor guy next to him looks like he's under enough stress already.)

10. The staff shall not depart from Judah, nor the scepter from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and to him shall the obedience of the people be:
11. Binding his foal to the vine, and his ass's colt to the choice vine; he washed his garments in wine, and his clothes in the blood of grapes:

Through sunshine and shadow, from darkness till noon
Over mountains that reach from the sky to the moon
A man with a dream that will never let go
Keeps searching to find El Dorado
So ride, boldly ride, to the end of the rainbow
Ride, boldly ride, till you find El Dorado...
*Gen 12.1 And the Lord had said to Abram, Get out from your country, and from your family, and from your father's house, to a land that I will show you:
My Daddy once told me what a man ought to be
There's much more to life than the things we can see
And the godliest mortal you ever will know
Is the one with the dream of El Dorado
So ride, boldly ride, to the end of the rainbow
Ride, boldly ride, till you find El Dorado

(it was a proof of concept thing)
Thank you for the ping-I cannot pretend I followed all of it, but...I did get the overarching concept, FRiend...:)
Thanks for taking the time to put that together and post it, and all the best to you and yours this season!

88 -- that would be the image of *two* babies wrapped in swaddling clothes. Just look for the little star, over the house (a byte -- which is 8 bits -- is also a beit in Hebrew, which is a house, the letter bet/beit having a value of 2):

A very Merry Christmas to you and yours! :)

Yes...it is a “weird little world out there”, and...it encompasses us all!
