FORTRESS MONROE, Friday, Dec. 13.

A telegraphic dispatch to the Norfolk Day Book of this date, received by a flag of truce which was sent from here to-day, announces the burning of Charleston. Whether it was caused by the whites or blacks I am unable as yet to say.

FORTRESS MONROE, Friday, Dec. 13.

A flag of truce, under command of Capt. MILLWARD, took Mr. EDDEY, of North Carolina, to Crancy Island to-day.

A telegraph dispatch to the Norfolk Day Book to-day, from Charleston, S.C., states that a fire broke out in that place on Wednesday night, which was supposed to have been the work of an incendiary. At the date of the last dispatch, five o'clock Thursday afternoon, the fire was still burning. The theatre on Broad-street, the Institute, and other public buildings are stated to have been destroyed. The fire swept across Broad-street. Assistance was sent from Augusta.

FORTRESS MONROE, Friday, Dec. 13.

The Norfolk Day Book of to-day gives the following startling intelligence:

BRANCHVILLE, Thursday, Dec. 12.

Passengers who have just arrived here report a destructive fire last night at Charleston.

The telegraph wires in that city were destroyed by fire.

The fire commenced in Charleston last night, at 9 o'clock, in RUSSEL & Co.'s sash factory, at the foot of Hazel-street, and communicated to the opposite side of Hazel, to CAMERON & Co.'s machine shops.

Under the impulse thus given and a stiff breeze with a small supply of water, the conflagration assumed a formidable character, nearly equaling the most extensive conflagration on the American continent.

The theatre, FLOYD's coach-factory, opposite the express office, the old Executive Building, and all the houses between that point and Queen-street, are burned. The whole of one side of Broad-street is destroyed, from Col. GADSDEN's residence to Mazyck-street.
