I heard it has a lot of “woke” crap in it which may explain why people are staying away. Plus who wants to sit in a theater for 2 hours wearing a mask?

The story is kind of yuk-o. Not sure even Spielberg can save it.

Most people have read or are aware of Romeo and Juliet, and since the West Side in the play/film was destroyed to make way for Lincoln Center 60 years ago AND Italians vs. PRs isn’t really what’s happening right now in the Big Town, a slow opening was predictable.

The total is a bit surprising considering that the film had a lot working in its favor.

The article goes on to list everything but the possibility that, uh, maybe it's not a very good movie? These days if the critics love it, it means that it's marked off everything on the social justice checklist - get woke, go broke.

My wife was telling me about this earlier.

My unanswered question was, “Why remake this? Restore the original? Sure. But a complete new production doesn’t make much sense.”

I was privileged to spend several hours with Carol Lawrence, “Maria” in the original Broadway production of West Side Story. She was acting as the celebrity hostess for a World Vision special on the famine relief work in East Africa.

I flew the helicopter taking her from the last fixed-wing airport up to the bush mission station. She sat up front and I had only two intercom headsets, so we had a one to one conversation for 45 minutes to an hour, each way.

Very nice lady.

This was all back in 1980 or 81.

Could have been worse.

Could have been "1941"

I saw the original last night on TMC or something.

Nothing beats the original, never will.

In my mind, the only West Side Story film that matters
is the one done with Natalie Wood, her costars and that spectacular music score. Some things do not need to be redone.

Beauty & The Beast often works as a redo, because certain changes to the cast or the music don’t seem to distort the core story. Sometimes, as with actress Emma Watson, the “Beauty” doesn’t even need to be all that beautiful.

Spielberg make a PC film in an era where musicals just don’t work much anymore. It would have been better if Netflix, Amazon, or one of the other streaming networks had bought it and shown it there. I believe it would have had a bigger audience .

Also some pictures can’t remade, they need to be left alone, trying to improve on the original ws not possible.

“Spielberg’s new film tries to make it right”

Here’s how, from the article:

1. Natalie Wood played Maria in the 1961 film, with Marni Nixon’s voice dubbed in for all the heroine’s songs. Neither one of them was Puerto Rican, or even Latina; most of the movie’s cast wasn’t, either.

2. There’s no one wearing brownface in this movie

3. The words to an iconic song have changed [so Puerto Rico is not portrayed negatively]

4. Valentina, the new character written for this movie, is a widow running her store and trying to navigate life between two cultures. And everyone who lives in their neighborhood — Sharks and Jets alike — is about to get evicted so wrecking balls can tear down their homes to make way for the construction of Lincoln Center.

5. Spanish is spoken much more — and with a Puerto Rican accent

6. ... to make sure the Spanish phrases were written and used correctly.

The movie might do better if it were classified as a documentary.

Spielberg refused to allow subtitles for the Spanish dialogue because that would be tantamount to saying English is superior. So, f him and his remake. Also, writer Tony Kushner is a disgusting POS.

Why go see a remake when the original is available? Remakes are always poor copies.

Maybe they’re tired of people remaking and destroying old favorites? I don’t like musicals so I won’t be seeing it.
