The steam transport City of New-York, Capt. NYE, from Port Royal on Dec. 6, arrived yesterday. The transport Atlantic, hence, arrived at Port Royal on the 2d inst.
By order of Gen. SHERMAN, Gen. STEVENS, with a force of 1,000 men, had taken permanent possession of Beaufort.
The gunboat Pawnee and several transports and a number of troops left Hilton Head on the 4th inst. for Tybee Island.
Gen. SHERMAN had appointed Col. NOBLE, of the Seventy-ninth Regiment, and Col. SUYDAM, to superintend the cotton-picking at Hilton Head and the adjacent islands.
The health of the troops remained good.
There had been no engagement, nor had there been any rebels seen near Beaufort since the departure of the Vanderbilt.
The expedition in command of Gen. VIELE had not yet sailed, but were actively preparing, and would probably sail about the 12th.
The City of New-York brings a large mail and 33 invalids from the army and navy at that station; also Lieuts. Mygatt, H. Wooster and Devarney; Mr. Palmer, W. Shields and Edward Ingraham.
There had been no new arrivals at Port Royal since the Atlantic.

The amount of typesetting in old newspapers is mindboggling, endless walls of text.
Good morning Professor.
Help me here: “... and 33 invalids”
What? As cannon fodder?

The racial perspective here is quite fascinating...
I think the invalids were brought to New York from the South Carolina expedition for rehab.
Battlefield injuries? Like WIA?
If so, odd description.
