One in five future thyroid cancers linked to excess weight (two in five for men, alone)
Medical Xpress / University of New South Wales / International Journal of Cancer ^ | Dec. 10, 2021 | Diane Nazaroff / Maarit A. Laaksonen et al

The prevalence of obesity has doubled in Australia in the last two decades. As a result, overweight and obesity will be associated with 10,000 thyroid cancers in the next decade.

Avoiding excess weight, especially obesity, should be a priority for thyroid cancer prevention, the first study to evaluate future thyroid cancer burden in Australia has found.

The world-first study found that 1 in 5 future thyroid cancers in Australia is attributable to current levels of overweight and obesity.

Dr. Laaksonen, a senior lecturer in Data Science, says this is concerning as the prevalence of obesity in Australia has doubled during the last two decades, with 75 percent of Australian men and 60 percent of Australian women being overweight or obese.

"This finding translates to close to 10,000 thyroid cancers in the next 10 years," Dr. Laaksonen says. "Obesity explains 75 percent of this burden in Australia."

But Dr. Laaksonen says this is the first time a study has evaluated the thyroid cancer burden attributable to current levels of overweight and obesity and compared this burden by sex.

Thyroid cancer is one of the few cancers that is two to three times as common in women as in men, but Dr. Laaksonen says the study found that the future thyroid cancer burden attributable to overweight/obese is higher for men compared with women.

Being overweight or obese explains two in five thyroid cancers in men, and one in 10 thyroid cancers in women.

"It is still not well understood what causes the sex difference in overweight/obesity-related thyroid cancer risk," Dr. Laaksonen says.

"But our findings add evidence to the urgent need to halt and reverse the current global trend in weight gain, especially obesity and especially in men."

The mechanism for higher cancer is not known, but extra fat bring low-level inflammation and other dysfunctions.

"It is still not well understood what causes the sex difference in overweight/obesity-related thyroid cancer risk," Dr. Laaksonen says.

The same question has been asked about COVID. The research points to androgen.

Which thyroid cancer? There are several types.

Thyroid problems cause obesity. So does the same problem that causes the obesity cause cancer too?

And maybe the same chemical that causes obesity by inducing metabolic syndrome causes thyroid cancer...preservatives, plastics, birth control pill hormones in the water...

Or is related to radiation as in the environment? Or iodine lack?

Cancer cells love sugar as fuel and most overweight people consume lots of sugar. Its like contantly putting Miracle Grow on the weeds in your lawn.

I worked hard to gain those extra pounds and went out of my way to avoid strenuous labor and this is the thanks nature gives me? It’s discrimination is what it is. I’m metabolism challenged. It’s not fair. Just not fair.

Extra weight is a problem in itself. My daughter and son-in-law are overweight, but still young enough to be perfectly healthy. I think. Daughter gets a lot of exercise, but is , IMO, best cook in the state.

On the other hand, I weigh 118, am a horrible cook, and often forget to eat. Didn’t have breakfast til one this afternoon. What a rotten way to stay healthy.

Hypothyroidism can cause people to be overweight. The thyroid helps with metabolism when working properly.

My doctor told be my thyroid cancer (papillary) was most likely caused by radiation.

My brother died of thyroid cancer.

They told him it was one of the “easy to cure” cancers.

I hope it helps you too.

My body didn’t like it, which puzzled my doctors. I don’t think my body was converting the T4 to T3. Levothyroxine/Synthroid made me gain almost 30 lbs. After trying various others that didn’t work I went to T3 only. I’m back to 100 lbs, which was is about normal for me after being on it for several months.

Interesting. I’ve been on it long enough to see that it at least isn’t causing me to gain weight. It did cause a moderate euphoria phase the first two weeks which I was hoping would continue...

The first month on T3, I had sooo much energy and my confusion went away. It was absolutely amazing and I never felt that good on any of the other drugs. Also, all the really bad side effects I had on the T4 went away.

The lack of energy and confusion though are the only things I’m having issues with now. My doctor is trying to help me with that. We both think I felt so amazing because my body was so desperate for that T3 and I wasn’t getting it with the last few meds. I’m just so relieved I no longer have migraines and I don’t feel like i’m going to drop dead daily due to the heart issues the other meds caused me.
