he Omicron variant has been detected in at least 19 states in the U.S., and is striking mainly fully vaccinated people, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Forty-three people in 19 states have tested positive for omicron, according to remarks made to the Associated Press by Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. About 75 percent of those cases are in people who are fully vaccinated, and one person has been hospitalized. One-third of those individuals had traveled internationally; one-third had received a booster. The cases so far have been “mild,” she said.
Preliminary data from South Africa meanwhile show that people who have previously had COVID-19 have more protection against the Omicron variant than those who have been vaccinated, the UK Telegraph reported.
The new study is the first to show how omicron compares to previous variants, such as beta and delta, on a level playing field and the preliminary data shows antibodies in blood samples are 41 times less effective for omicron than for the 2020 strain.
“The results we present here with omicron show much more extensive escape,” the researchers of the new study said.
Although the new variant appears to be milder, it is reportedly more infectious than previous variants.
Officials in the United States are urging people to get vaccinated and boosted to protect against Omicron, despite the vaccines’ apparent ineffectiveness at fighting the new variant.
Late last month, Joe Biden used the emergence of the new variant to pressure unvaccinated Americans aged 5 and up to get their shots, and for everyone else to get booster shots six months after their second dose.
NIAID Director Dr. Anthony Fauci said last week that there is “every reason to believe’ boosters protect against Omicron.

In the USA, about 80% of the Covid deaths are over age 60.
However, about 80% of Americans over age 60 are fully vaccinated.
Fauci and the MSM want us to believe this has become a pandemic of unvaccinated geriatrics infecting other unvaccinated geriatrics.

Has anyone reading this comment tried to visit an elderly family member in a nursing home in the last 20 months?
Proof of vax, or proof of a recent test, or standing behind a plexiglass barrier are required for admission at the facility where my two elderly aunts live.
The geriatrics are NOT responsible for this virus that will not disappear.
They use sequencing (gene sequencing).
The CDC samples a small number of tests each week and sequences them to determine the dominant variant and to identify new variants. (The exact number sampled eludes me, but it is in the tens of thousands I believe.) They are running max capacity.
Supposedly the PCR tests would react a certain way for delta that would give a strong indication it was delta, but still the tests needed to be sequenced to be sure.
Omicron does not provide a discernible signal in PCR testing like delta did.
Thanks, I thought it must be sequencing. I did not see how a PCR test could be out there that could isolate a new variant just as it is occurring!
