Some places had strict mask rules, like San Francisco (where a man was famously shot for failing to comply), while others had none, like Boston. Of course, there was no more evidence that mask laws made any difference then than today.

It's funny, and telling, that Woodrow Wilson, of all Presidents, did not attempt to impose a national mask mandate.

They were wrong in your alternate reality world where hospital staff wore them for their own protection from viruses for the last several decades.

Until recently the only medical staff regularly wearing masks in hospitals, other than the ones in your soap operas, were surgical staff. Surgical staff wear them so that bacterial contamination from drool and possibly contaminated foreign objects like nose hair dont get into a patients wound. Its not to protect themselves from clouds of pernicious miasmas.

Interesting to consider the US response then compared to Europeans of the same time and to the world today in light of the Parasite-Stress Theory. Parasite-Stress Theory hypothesizes that societies with more stress from pathogens tend to be closed to outsiders while societies with less disease stress tend to be more free.

European powers in the ‘20 and ‘30s, particularly the defeated axis states, were very germ phobic as an outgrowth of their experience with the Spanish Flu. The theory postulates that the authoritarianism in governments in Germany, Italy and elsewhere could happen because of the psychology of infection fear.

Flash forward to today and worldwide authoritarianism is flourishing and being accepted by scared populations who got the message to shutdown and isolate, rather than this much more reasonable response. In the US, a lot of us look at this an see it as the better way to respond than what was done and we still love freedom, while many of our neighbors embrace the fear and reject our freedom.

I would imagine that something like that would have regularly occurred at General Hospital. If not they would have missed out on a great hook for some doctor/nurse/patient love scene episodes.

Real medical staff generally know enough not to wear them all day long. They certainly wouldnt wear the same one all day long, especially not cloth ones.

Unfortunately, many people who believe in cooties do wear the same cloth mask, day after day, all day long.
