IMPORTANT FROM PORT ROYAL: Gen. Viele’s Expedition not yet Started; Immense Quantities of Cotton to be Secured (12/7/1861)

The United States steam transport Vanderbilt, Capt. LE FEVRE, from Port Royal, S.C., Dec. 3, with mails and passengers to Col. D.D. TOMPKINS, U.S. Quartermaster, arrived at this port yesterday morning.

Nothing of importance had transpired since the sailing of the Rhode Island. Gen. VIELE's expedition was fitting out with all possible haste, and would leave on its mission as soon as more troops arrived, which would be very soon, as they were expected at any moment.

The harbor at Port Royal has been buoyed off, so that a vessel drawing twenty-five feet of water can enter with perfect safety.

The health of the troops continues good.

Beaufort still remains unoccupied by the National troops. Visits are daily made by officers of the army and navy to that place.

The schooner Western Star was to sail for New-York in a day or two, with a cargo of cotton.

The work of digging intrenchments on Tybee Island was progressing rapidly, the laborers being protected by two National gunboats.

Two National gunboats were also lying off Beaufort for the purpose of repelling any advance which might be made by the rebels to occupy the island.

Our intrenchments at Hilton Head have been strengthened. Two piers are in course of construction, and several storehouses have been erected.

Transports were busily discharging. The following vessels were at Port Royal when the Vanderbilt left:

British frigate Immortalite.

United States frigate Wabash.

United States gunboats Mohican, Pembina, Ottawa, Curlew, R.B. Forbes, Isaac Smith, Mercury, O.M. Petit, Penguin, Augusta, Florida, Bienville.

Transports -- Steamers Ariel, Daniel Webster, Philadelphia, Matanzas, Oriental, Empire City, Cahawba, Roanoke, Star of the South, Parkersburgh, Locust Point, Winfield Scott, (condemned.) Potomac, Ben Deford, Atlantic. Ships Great Republic, Ocean Express, Golden Eagle, Zenas Coffin, and a number of brigs and schooners coal-laden.
