A 30-year-old man jumped out of an airplane as it was taxiing at Phoenix's Sky Harbor International Airport Saturday.
Southwest Flight 4236...
Passenger Chris Ricci, who was seated in the row next to the man, described what happened to sister station KCRA.
"All the passengers we hear this commotion of this flight attendant and person wrestling when they open the door," said Ricci. "The flight attendant is like, 'Oh my God, he jumped out of the plane.'"
The man landed on the tarmac and made his way to the fire station, entered the building and locked himself inside a dormitory room, Keller said.
Authorities responded to the incident, after which the flight "continued to its designated gate," Southwest Airlines said.

I wonder if the escape system was there from the beginning? Or implemented after Tenirife? Here’s the video I saw of the co-pilot telling his story (4-minutes):

The Southwest has been treating their passengers lately, I don’t blame him
Better a taxiing airplane than an airplaning taxi:
Don’t know. I would guess from the beginning, since it looks really built in and well thought out. But I really don’t know.
I grew up knowing there was always a chance my dad wouldn't come home. Fortunately, he made it through his whole career with only one minor incident (that he told us about).
They showed us those inertia reels in training. The cables, if I recall correctly, looked like flat metal tapes — like something that could slice your hand off. I remember seeing them and thinking, “Yeah, I think I would try to find another way out.” They showed us video of someone using the escape hatch and it would be like jumping off a building. They probably haven’t tested those things with a human subject since that video was made in 1970-something!

When ya gotta go, ya gotta go.
You should have seen me on a pair of inline roller blades a few years later. I blew half a week's pay buying the blades, gloves, pads, helmet, the works. I lasted fifteen minutes and sold the whole lot to a pawn shop. In the Yiddish vernacular, I am a klutz.
Aircraft that have a flight deck high off the ground, like the 747 and C-5, have inertia reel escape system. Located next to the pilot’s seat, they open the window, grab the handle of the reel, and jump out the window.
Sometimes you just change your mind. 😏
