A 30-year-old man jumped out of an airplane as it was taxiing at Phoenix's Sky Harbor International Airport Saturday.

Passenger Chris Ricci, who was seated in the row next to the man, described what happened to sister station KCRA.
"All the passengers we hear this commotion of this flight attendant and person wrestling when they open the door," said Ricci. "The flight attendant is like, 'Oh my God, he jumped out of the plane.'"
The man landed on the tarmac and made his way to the fire station, entered the building and locked himself inside a dormitory room, Keller said.
Authorities responded to the incident, after which the flight "continued to its designated gate," Southwest Airlines said.

Seems to me that opening the emergency door takes enough time for an alert, able passenger to have engaged....apparently not.....
Dang. As I understand it, Southwest flies 737s exclusively. It is a “fair ways” down to the ground from the open door. I wouldn’t try it, but then I’ve got old-guy knees so...
Maybe he saw a monster on the wing.
Shame the passenger didn’t wait about 5-minutes before jumping...
It amazes me that people are able to survive such stunts and walk/ run/ crawl so far away.
I just saw a short video about the KLM/PanAm disaster at Tenirife. The co-pilot of the PanAm 747 dropped out of the cockpit and to the ground 48 feet below. Then he helpd encourage other passengers that had walked out on to the wing to jump before the fuel tanks exploded. Sixty-five passengers made it out of the wreck. A miracle when you think about it.
Keep your feet and knees together, relax the legs, put your arms over your face, drop, and roll with the shock when you hit the ground. That’s about all you can do to improve the odds when there’s nothing else!

I don’t know what series they fly, but I do remember throwing bags for Continental 20 years ago when I got to spend time in and around a 737-800, those things are fairly high off the ground for a plane that size.
My dad knew a man in Santa Barbara back in 1977 who was on that Pan Am plane.
The man owned a motel in Santa Barbara, and he did not survive.
That was one of my favorite Twilight Zone episodes.
I agree, that’s a healthy drop.
