I was an ’80s baby, so this was well before my time. But apparently in the wacky culinary headspace of the 1960s, people used to drink one very particular soda, warmed but not boiled, for good cheer and good tidings. That soda was Dr. Pepper.
To be honest, out of all the sodas I could see being warmed up, it’d certainly be The Good Doctor. There’s the cherry and prune overtones, a little caffeine, syrupy sweetness—what’s not to like? Matador Network has the story of the sweet hot times, from way back when. I was made aware of it by someone I follow on Twitter, who posted a link to the article with the commentary, “Let’s bring it back. Hot Dr. Pepper.”

Absolutely not. Soda is poison. It should never be consumed by anyone, at any time. JMHO

The cane sugar DP is in green packaging.
Got three 12 packs a few weeks ago at a Kroger.
Now I know
I’ve had it.. I am in Minnesota. it was a boy scout camping trip.
I love Dr Pepper but I never had it hot again ;)
Kentucky hillbilly and this is a new one on me. We do the Dr Pepper with salted peanuts if we add anything other than ice. Preference is RC Cola and salted peanuts added. For the record I do like an occasional ice cold Diet Dr Pepper, way better than Diet Coke or Diet Pepsi.
I can’t stand warm Dr Pepper, let alone the idea of it hot..
So much sugar in it just to make the pepper flavor tolerable that it’s only drinkable when ice cold
Ah yes!!! Salted peanuts and Dr Pepper. Haven’t done that in years.
“Maybe just in the big cities?”
It was certainly a thing in my neck of the woods in Virginia. There was a morning guy on TV, Irving Sharpe I think his name was. Every winter morning he would extoll the virtues of Hot Dr Pepper. My family usually bought Pepsi when we had carbonated beverages, except in winter when we switched over to Hot Dr Pepper.
Good times.
look at you in the frozen north drinking hot drinks!
peanuts in the RC. that is correct.
Ahhh...
The morning show was “Top of the Morning” with Irv Sharp on WDBJ-7 out of Roanoke, Virginia.
I remember by first attempt at being a Pepper, I spit it out too. I remember well how sad I was that I spent my money on something that disgusting. It was a different formula then though. Not that Im saying its any better now.
I imagine it [warm Dr. Pepper] to be somewhat like a spiced tea.
I grew up in Texas then. I encountered it more than a few times. It was a thing for a while. They would dispense it out of those big stand up coffee urns with the spigot on them.
I’ve heard of it but never tried it. Hot and flat Dr. Pepper doesn’t sound like it would be that great. Even the Dr. Pepper Slurpee you can get at Bucee’s is a bit underwhelming.
I’m sorry….
We can no longer be friends. LOL!
Never slander Bucee’s Sir! you offend my suthun dignities...
The name "Dr. Pepper" was first used commercially in 1885. It was introduced nationally in the United States at the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition as a new kind of soda pop, made with 23 flavors. Its introduction in 1885 preceded the introduction of Coca-Cola by one year.
It was formulated by Brooklyn-born pharmacist Charles Alderton in Morrison's Old Corner Drug Store in Waco, Texas. To test his new drink, he first offered it to store owner Wade Morrison, who also found it to his liking. Patrons at Morrison's soda fountain soon learned of Alderton's new drink and began ordering a "Waco".[3] Alderton gave the formula to Morrison, who named it Dr. Pepper (later stylized as "Dr Pepper").
