Retired Colonel Edward Shames, the last surviving officer from the legendary Easy Company of World War II paratroopers whose exploits were featured in the award-winning miniseries Band of Brothers, died at age 99 on Friday.

Shames died 'peacefully at home,' according to an obituary posted by the Holloman-Brown Funeral Home & Crematory.

Born to Jewish parents, Shames forged his mother's signature to enlist in the Army in 1942 at just 19, and was one of the officers in charge of the famed Easy Company, part of the US Army's 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division.

The book Band of Brothers - chronicling the bravery of Easy Company, or the Screaming Eagles - was written by Stephen Ambrose in 1992.

Shames's death leaves 97-year-old Bradford Freeman as the last surviving member of Easy Company. Freeman, who enlisted and was a mortarman, was a consultant for the Band of Brothers HBO miniseries created by Tom Hanks and Stephen Spielberg in 2001.

He’s got a few long form interviews on youtube. Interesting stuff about his WW2 experiences. I was watching them a couple weeks ago. RIP.

Isn’t it strange that Hitler fought a war against the Communists and the big European bankers, and we are fighting the same fight.

The NAZIs, the Natonal Socialist German Workers Party, were evil twins of the communists. Communism, fascism, socialism -- all believe in the power of the state over the people and deny God. Take the genocidal doctrines of the nazis out, and you have the European Union, sans the stupid looking uniforms.

Might have been, for those times— quite clearly was NOT what was needed shortly thereafter, useless in true warfighting skills (as proven in later scenes, including his rightful removal from harm and proper placement as a bookkeeper).

Bless your father’s memory- what a witness to that horror, and glad he was able to speak of it to friends and family. An aside, from my education- the medical rescuers of death camp survivors quickly learned they could not just “feed regular food” to the starving. These skeletons had no vitamins onboard to process the nutrition. And so (and this is in UN websites now) they developed a type of, well, gruel/porridge, which was packed with water soluble vitamins, none bulk producing soluble fiber and major digestible carbohydrates and long chain fatty acids/fats to be slowly introduced to those remaining. Saved a lot of lives as these progressed under their care.

The poor starving survivors gave up their last “adrenalin” if you will with the sheer happiness of being freed, and no physical capability to hold down regular food to gain nutrition from it. Appalling conditions. God Bless the US soldiers who helped these people back.

In Weimar Germany, hitler came to power as a Leftist Socialist (very much to the Center Right of the majority party in Germany at the time— the Communists).

It was the Ruhr Valley industrialists- Krupps, Thyssens war industry, steel, oil etc. who supported hitler thinking they could manage him, as he would then “manage” the vast violent labor problems they had with the Communists in the factories, and the huge out of work post WWI veterans and civilian population of the Weimar mega inflation. Sounds familiar to the purposely created Inflation by our current crop of Leftist Socialist demonrats who have partnered with their further ultra Leftist Communists of the Squad and BernieBots-— everything is “free” paid for... by you and me!

Thank you. Close family was picket duty submarine command accompanying the USS Enterprise, and six hours out of Pearl on the 7th December. Took the messages, outside the closed sub nets “this is no drill, keep out of port..” The sub left in early October with the Lexington and the Enterprise, ferrying aircraft to Midway.

They were fully loaded with torpedoes and all ammo, and had orders for “weapons free” against any Japanese shipping. A month before Dec. 7th. FDR knew, and Churchill too, as the brits had cracked the jap codes of the time.

Family’s memory coming into Pearl (once they survived surface attacks from the US destroyers mistaking them for jap mini-subs) was of the harbor on fire, bodies on fire in the water, the Arizona still burning. They refueled from the untouched (the 3rd wave Jap attack was not carried out- called off by Yamamoto) tank farm- took on torpedoes and went back out on war patrol into 1942. Vivid memory, never forgotten, by him and by our family to this day.

Your son’s Scout project— well done!

We should also never forget the simultaneous attacks on Manila, Guam, Wake Island, Hong Kong, and British Malaya- which, along with Taiwan, are now either targets or under control (Hong Kong) of the Chinese Communists. Ironic how the world shifts and turns, but we have learned unless we keep our heads in the sand.

Krupps, Thyssens

My auto stamping plant was purchased by Thyssen Steel back around 1980 and we became Thyssen/"xyz" Co.

Then in 1997 Thyssen merged with Krupp and my company became Thyssen/Krupp "xyz" Company

An amazing group of men who, like many, endured the unimaginable to stop evil.

RIP Colonel and well done.

Probably a typo. Why would he need to forge his mother’s signature at age 19?

Can you imagine today’s “soldiers” doing what these men did? Trannies going to war in dresses, afraid to run their hose? This is what Odungo did to our nation—left us wide open to attack by firing all the truly combat experienced officers and turning the military into a social justice experiment welcoming every sort of freak, in the name of “diversity”. And his meat puppet Biden is simply continuing those dangerous policies.

I had the pleasure and honor of knowing and bending elbows with “Old Man Charley”
He had served in the USN at the end of WWI and in WWII and when Korea came around, the Navy wouldn’t let him back in....so he joined the Merchant Marines.

They broke the mold after making men like him.
