You can find this fun quotation puzzle, to combat early dementia and senility in us baby boomers, in several daily publications. I challenge us with the best ones out there.

The way it works is a letter stands for another letter. For example: AXYDLBAAXR is LONGFELLOW (does not apply to today's cryptogram).

Beware, the game is very addictive. If this is your first time, don't be intimidated, you’ll be solving them all within a few days. If you’re stumped, take a break and return to it.

PLEASE DO NOT post the answer in general comments, but DO post your time and how you made out.

You can certainly send your solution to my private reply, or if you need a hint for today’s Cryptogram ASK THE GROUP FOR HELP!

I suggest printing these out and work them on paper. If you need a little help you can copy and paste it to Hal’s Helper below.

You can then work on the puzzle without using pen and paper, but I recommend that you do NOT look at the letter counter.

HAL'S CRYPTOGRAM HELPER

One last request. Feel free to post a fun or clever clue, the more tangential to the quotation the better, but please don’t put the actual words of the quote in the clue.

An author I am sure you all know. The last sentence is well known, at least in paraphrase. The background, less so.

If you need a clue ask the group to send you a letter to your private reply.

4 minutes good
3 minutes excellent
2 minutes exceptional
90 seconds superior

After getting a few frequent letters, It was easy to guess the author, Then filling in words that made sense. By the time half was filled in. The rest of the puzzle did itself. I really love these long ones.

You just need a cemetery or hospital showing in your image of the town to make it perfect.

Longer quotes are generally easiest, especially if you use an electronic aid like HAL. I like to provide something extra on Sunday. I have some in mind that are short, and interesting, but I am afraid they might be too challenging. I wish there was a way (other than length) to rate the difficulty of decryption.

A fun quote to solve. 24 letters were used in today’s puzzle.

The cryptos over at puzzlebaron.com are user-rated. It's a start.

Yes, I agree.

Unless you are one of those folks who can spell a word more than one way. /hint>

I can make a rough estimate. Any cryptogram beginning with “The” is easier than one beginning with “Eignenwert”. Contractions aid decryption because cryptograms don’t encrypt apostrophes. Short common words are easier than long uncommon words. Latinates ending in “-tion” and participles ending in “-ing” are helpful to the decoder. The names of the Concord neighbors Ralph Waldo Emerson (5-5-7) and Henry David Thoreau (also 5-5-7) are giveaways. The patterns in Emerson and David distinguish them. Today’s author (4-5) is a good starting point guess when available.

Especially when you misspell Eigenwert! (sorry!) ;)

But you're absolutely correct. "The" and "that" is something I always look for first. Three letters with high-low(ish)-high letter count is almost always "the" for example.

Should I have said, “characteristic response”?

Typos happen...that’s why there’s a word for them. ;)
