What started as an attempt to get rid of pesky creatures ended with an entire house going up in flames.
A house of nearly 10,000 square feet in Dickerson, Maryland, an hour west of Baltimore, was engulfed in flames on November 23 when the homeowner tried to smoke out a snake infestation on the property, Pete Piringer, chief spokesperson for the Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Service, told CNN.
Coals were used as the heat source for the smoke, but they were placed too close to combustible materials, eventually setting the house on fire, Piringer explained.
The fire started in the basement and quickly spread through each floor, engulfing the multistory home...
Piringer told CNN that the owner was at home a few hours before, but luckily no one was there at the start of the fire. A neighbor passing by saw the smoke and called 911. At around 10 p.m., 75 firefighters showed up at the scene to battle the blaze.
It took a few hours for firefighters to get the fire under control, but it wasn't completely out until the next morning.
The damages will cost more than $1 million, Piringer said. The house was recently purchased for $1.8 million, according to public records.
The fire department deemed the incident an accident as there was no evidence, or intention, of starting the fire.
Piringer recommends using other ways to battle an infestation.

Wish they had nuked it from orbit. A little wind drift and viola! No more snakes in and around the People’s House. The price of gasoline would probably go down too. LGBFJB!
“ Maryland homeowners burned down their home while attempting to rid the house of snakes.”
______________
Had a GOP party and many attendees were RINOs, eh. Good strategy, poor execution.
They should do that for the DC swampus variety as well..
Time will tell, I guess....
Snakes Win!
There was a lawyer infestation in the basement????
Why does the price of the domicile matter? Once a pregnant snake gets in, she can deliver 10 to 30 snakelets in a quiet corner and there won’t be any natural predators to reduce your new tenants, unless you have a cat. That would constitute an infestation for most people. If she’s oviparous, those snakelets will be slithering around right after delivery.
We have a nice house but have found the occasional small snake in the living room and kitchen throughout the years. It only takes a door open at the right time or that a/c pipe opening being a little too large in the utility closet.
Using hot coals to smoke out snakes.
That has an almost ritualistic vibe to it.
City folk....
We can IF this all we want, but only time will tell. We’ll see what the insurance company says on that over $1M repair bill.... experience just tells me something is fishy...
You got to realize that to some folks, ONE snake is a snake infestation. I’ve seen some real over the top reactions to snakes and spiders, and I believe this story to be true.
🙋♀️ That would be me!
Not if the snakes were denning under the house.
Using coal to flush out vermin sounds like a Chinese remedy.
That would not be a surprise in that area.
I have a website in memory of a rat snake some sadistic bitch doused with gas and set on fire.
The poor thing panicked in agony and fled under her house, burning it to the ground.

There are a lot of people associated with the Federal Government in that area, and you know what kind of winners they tend to be....
". Coals were used as the heat source for the smoke,"
Could have used powdered sulfur. I read that years ago it was a yearly ritual for some farmhouses to close the place up, and set a can (or cans) of powdered sulfur in the basement within a basin of water (around the can) and light the sulfur on fire (burns slow), and quickly leave the house for a couple day, come back and air is all out and move back in (with windows still open I presume). When sulfur is burned, it turns into a gas called sulfur dioxide, rather deadly to insects and mammals. However, snacks would likely leave and come back unless all is closed up.
Doesn’t work.
None of the stuff they sell rubes to “keep snakes away” works.
If snakes are there it’s because there is a FOOD source, namely disease ridden vermin such as rats and mice.
Those vermin are vectors for diseases that affect humans.
Thank God for the snakes He created to save your life.
She probably dropped her crack pipe.
I’ve heard the same about people setting cats on fire.
