A three-year study found that the risk of delayed intracranial hemorrhage and death following head trauma was significantly higher for adults taking older blood thinning medications including clopidogrel (Plavix) and warfarin (Coumadin), according to research. Taking aspirin concurrently with any blood thinner may increase the risk of delayed hemorrhage.
Intracranial hemorrhage occurs when blood vessels within the brain rupture, releasing blood into the brain tissue. In a delayed traumatic intracranial hemorrhage, bleeding in the brain occurs after the initial trauma, usually within 48 hours, after an initial negative head CT.
High blood pressure, head injury and the use of blood thinners are known causes of intracranial hemorrhage.
Adults taking blood thinners who suffer head trauma typically undergo CT imaging of the brain. However, the standard of care beyond initial imaging is not well defined.
"Different hospital networks have different strategies for repeat imaging of these patients," Dr. Chang said.
Within the study group, 576 patients were taking one of the newer blood thinners, such as apixiban (Eliquis), rivaroxaban (Xarelto) and dabigatran (Pradaxa), and 470 patients were taking warfarin, clopidogrel or another older medication.
All deaths in the study group were among patients in the warfarin/clopidogrel/older blood thinner group.
Among the total study group, 345 patients were taking both blood thinners and aspirin. Of the 20 patients who suffered a delayed hemorrhage, 15 were taking an older type of blood thinner, and nine of the 15 were also taking aspirin.
"The rate of delayed hemorrhage was higher in patients taking older blood thinners compared to novel drugs, and significantly higher in patients taking aspirin in addition to the older medications," Dr. Chang said.
Among the five patients taking novel blood thinners who experienced a delayed hemorrhage, four were also taking aspirin.

The three “newer” blood thinners appear to be over $450 a month.

Yes, I was on Plavix. Generic. Doctor wanted to switch me to Brillinta, $400+ a month. No thanks.
To the story, doctors took me off Plavix a couple years ago after I had a very severe stomach ulcer. Lost a lot of blood. It wasn’t caused by the Plavix but being on it didn’t help. I had been on it for more than 10 years. Ulcer is healed now, but the cardiologist thinks I don’t need to be back on Plavix at this point.
By and large I trust old, generic meds but of course sometimes scientific improvements come along. At these prices for new drugs people are forced to make a cost benefits decision.
Seems lately to be an all out war on aspirin.
Makes me wonder why.

I was on Plavix and still got a clot that took a considerable share of my eyesight

Stay away from wayfarin. They have a hard time adjusting the dosage, requiring constant trips for bloodwork

Mama was on cumiden when she was living. When she had used her prescription she would say,” I got get my rat poison prescription refilled.” I have a friend whose wife the doctors overdosed with blood thinner. She drowned in her own blood as she slept, they said. Her blood was so thin that it seeped through the linings in her lungs.
You jest (a little) but the sad truth is that these drug companies have the financial incentive to study these types of issues. They pay for themselves if they get more market share. And in any case they are already in for many $100s of millions just to get the drug approved these studies are cheap in comparison.
If they wanted to show a new drug is safer than a generic drug (like in the case of head injury) and their study failed they would just halt and bury the study. Nobody would be the wiser. If it showed a benefit, they would pursue it and publish it (like they did here). Nobody is going to pay to study Plavix anymore so they could engineer the study with subtle biases to show the result they want. So take these types of studies with a grain of - well not salt if you have high blood pressure.
Especially after letting them inject you with the WuFlu frankenshot. Make sure you only use the pills that Big Pharma sells at $1,200 a pop.
Taking blood thinners AND aspirin may be stupid. I’ve always heard warnings not to do it. But HEALTHY people taking an aspirin a day? Doesn’t bother me. And nothing in this study says it should.
You don’t take any NSAIDs (Aspirin, Aleve, Advil, Voltaren, even Pepto Bismol)with blood thinners..not even grapefruit or CBDs.
In five years over the counter aspirin will be illegal in the United States.
Taken as prescribed, they are good for you. They are used for several different ailments. It is when they go overboard with them that the trouble begins. I have read that getting the Kickapoo Joy Juice[vaccine] thickens one’s blood.

That is a cheap internet ad headline. iPhone users need to know this secret ( Do this tonight). I don’t know how people can be so gullible. Anyway how many head traumas are you going to have versus a stray blood clot that causes a stroke? Like Covid vaccinations. How bad is Covid anyway which is rather predictable as opposed to getting an experimental vaccine? I have naturally thin blood not hemophiliac but when I cut myself I bleed profusely. I would rather bleed than have a stroke. Most people don’t see what a stroke will do if you don’t die from it because all of the care homes and convalescent facilities where stroke victims are stored out of sight and out of mind. Half body paralysis, inability to speak or walk.
I wonder who would post this kind of garbage. Is your life so dull? Don’t stop taking your blood thinners thinking you are going to do better after bumping your head.
