"Tennessee and Cumberland Rivers-Loyal Men Must Be Summarily Dealt With – 4" This article quotes a Confederate newspaper in Nashville also decrying conditions at Confederate Fort Donalson, on the Cumberland River, saying:
"We understand that the enemy's gunboats were within a mile and a half of Fort Donelson, (at Dover, on the Cumberland,) on Thursday last.
The necessity for powerful defences both on the Tennessee and Cumberland rivers is becoming more and more apparent every day...
...every man who is alive to the importance of the interests involved, must see that they should be so strong as to defy any assault that the enemy may make upon them.
If there is not enough force there now, it should be dispatched without further delay.
Not a moment should be lost..."
Just guessing here... I'd suppose Confederates have about two more months to fortify the defenses of their strong-points on the Tennessee & Columbia rivers...
