The Santa Fe Sheriff's Department said it is awaiting results from the FBI which would shed light on how the gun could have been fired, whether that was just pulling back the hammer – which hits the firing pin – just pulling the trigger or both.
"Guns don't just go off," Sheriff Adan Mendoza told Fox News Digital. "So whatever needs to happen to manipulate the firearm, he did that and it was in his hands."

The interviews Alec has been giving about the shooting are what prosecutors call “evidence.”
He must be king of the morons!
Baldwin has a lot of his money tied up in this disastrous film......
ergo anything he says has to be self-serving. How much money?
Must be millions judging from his sit-down w/ Stephan/olous..........where he put on a crying act.
On the advice of my attorney- strictly off the record — I would suggest he desist from these interviews and STFU
Single action revolvers have to be cocked first and then the trigger pulled.
Saw that interview. He is mentally ill IMO.
Trying to influence a perspective jury?
What if he was in process of cocking the pistol and his thumb slipped off the hammer, allowing it to fall?
Yep, totally agree. And his wife is just as much a lunatic as he is if not more so. Remember when she made pretend she was Spanish and could not understand English? Who does something like that? She’s a head case just as much as he is.
“ What if he was in process of cocking the pistol and his thumb slipped off the hammer, allowing it to fall?”
It would depend on whether or not the gun had gone into battery or not, ie the cylinder locked securely in place with the cartridge in line with the bore when the hammer fell. There is also the half cocked position to add to the mix.

You have the right to remain silent. Too bad he doesn’t taker that common sense advise.
it was his other personality, Bad Alec, who pulled the trigger, not Good Alec, who was crying during the interview.
You don’t cock a single action revolver until you are ready to shoot. Once you pull the hammer back, MY single actions have pretty light triggers and it won’t take much for them to go off.
Before you pull the hammer back? The trigger won’t budge and the only way to fire it is to drop it on concrete. Note: Modern design single action revolvers will NOT go off if dropped on the hammer. The gun used for the movie was a replica of the old Colt SAA and it would.
PLUS, he POINTED it! MAJOR point!
There is a half-cock notch that is supposed to catch the hammer if that happens. (Hence the saying "don't go off half-cocked.)
The half-cock notch could be broken off if the hammer is hit with enough force, which is why SAAs are usually carried with an empty chamber instead of a full 6 rounds and the hammer on the half-cock notch.
So, are you agreeing that this could have been a situation with the older model gun where the hammer could have fallen on a live round if his thumb slipped while cocking it?
Doesn’t alleviative any of the guilt as far as I’m concerned, but it would explain why he has the gall to say he never pulled the trigger.
I remember that movie! Especially how it ended with the store keeper, who said the gun was “evil”..... No spoiler from me!
Pietta makes two different types of copies of the Colt 1873. One is like the original and has a half cock to catch a slipped hammer.
The only way it will fire without the trigger pulled is if it has been converted to a “slip hammer”(no trigger) or has the trigger tied back.
And one that has a transfer bar in which it will only fire if the trigger has been pulled.
