The Democrats are doing everything they can to get Americans into electric cars. However, those cars come with the risk of a serious loss of power—not just for the car but for those who buy those cars.
We have to begin with asking why is the governing pushing electric vehicles? And it’s not just cars, it’s also trucks. Why are they ignoring hybrid vehicles? If something happens to the electric guts of a properly designed hybrid car, the vehicle can limp along with its smaller gas engine until it reaches safety. What happens to a fully electric vehicle if its electrical system fails? Nothing, of course! You’re stuck. All you have is a hunk of metal and plastic. And if you run out of electricity while driving, you can’t just get a gallon gas can to fill the tank until you get to the nearest service station. Again, you’re stuck.
The next question is, “Are electric cars cheaper than gas cars?” No, they cannot be cheaper, and that’s even if you run them on renewables. Take solar energy, for example. Even if sunlight is free, the laws of thermodynamics still control.
Every time energy changes form, there is a loss factor. Sunlight impinging on solar cells only changes 14-47% of the energy to electricity. The forty-seven percent figure is state-of-the-art, so it is not available for everyday use.
Electricity is then stored in chemical-based car batteries (with a loss). And then chemical energy is reconverted back to electricity (with a loss) and finally to mechanical energy where the tire rubber meets the road (with a loss). At a guess, not more than 5% of the original sun power turns the wheels of an EV car. That’s awful. What this means is that it is more efficient to run a gas-powered...

Government never thinks things through. They come up with an idea, vote on it, fund it then have no idea how to implement it but throw money at it until it fails completely then come up with an idea on how to fix it and the cycle repeats.
There is really zero difference between dino juice cars or electric cars for being able to do those things.

Cause they did it wrong... Locomotives have been extremely efficient at converting diesel horsepower into an increase in torque output for over half a century. No batteries needed.
Meaning a diesel 1/4 of the size would do the same amount of work as a full sized diesel when set up right.
The diesel version of the Nissan Rogue would get me around 60mpg when I drove them on England's motorways.
The gas version here in the US gets around 30mpg.

Don’t care so much about recharging my problem is affordability. Right now a larger portion of the population can afford a car of some type and vintage. I have two of them, paid for, that I use. I can not afford to replace either vehicle with electric. Even the cheapest one is 35 grand with incentives. So the idea seems to be electric vehicles for the elite and mass transport (electric mind you) for the masses. Mobility of the masses goes out the window and the government, under the guise of the environment ends up controlling everyone everywhere except the elites who can afford the electricity to charge their very expensive electric cars.
Yep, it does work well. And no batteries needed at all. And I agree, it is all or nothing in their minds. This will never work based on their ideology. A compromise would actually work. Ironic but the oil companies are now getting hit with their own historical lobbying efforts. THEY are the ones who have been fighting against diesel passenger cars since the 70’s, they themselves fully supported the ideology that diesel emissions would be too much. So the anti-diesel passenger vehicle mindset is now permanent because of them.
It all started because a diesel is much more efficient and the oil companies would not sell as much fuel.
They were kind of a harmless novelty, back in the ‘90s. George Wendt’s brother was one of my brother’s neighbors. He had a couple of them, and was a big advocate. The implications of having a national fleet of them haven’t been thoroughly thought out by consumers. I think the control freaks know exactly what they’re doing, though.

In that regard, they’re a step back to the days of travel by horses and horse-drawn conveyances. It was Henry Ford that gave Americans the freedom of mobility. As a way of life, it’s only a hundred year trend in society. Too much personal freedom for the top-down control freaks to deal with.

Makes sense. I am seeing more Mao Tse Tung apartment buildings in “mixed development” land uses going up in many medium sized cities in the past few years. These buildings all have the same drabby look, even if the cities are hundreds of miles apart. These “brand new” places are marketed to get the masses in locations where walking or access to public transit is the way to get around. It should not escape notice that one may not buy these units ... buying means private ownership ... can’t have that in communist utopia.

Yep... Now imagine if it was designed as a hybrid with an even smaller diesel engine driving a generator powering a electric motor/hub motors as output. It would probably get 80+ miles to the gallon and still have the same performance capabilities. In fact electric motors have better acceleration torque. Batteries not even needed.
As for emissions, a diesel puts out very little CO2 compared to a gas engine. What they scream and holler about is diesel “particulates”. But modern computerized diesels are now putting out very little particulates at all. So they are actually cleaner than gas engines. But it all boils down to this simple basic rule, the less fuel used the less emissions put out.
Currently the Average automobile age in the USA is 12 years. EV batteries are warranted for eight years. Replacing EV batteries cost north of $10,000. So what will those who are unable to afford a used EV and then replace the battery pack drive? If an EV becomes worthless once the battery is used up, then the car only has value for those eight years. Of course the EV MFGs will love people needing to replace the car every eight to ten years. But how is that helpful to the planet? 70% of Carbon a car consumes is used to build the car. Just being able to drive an EV to the 12 year mark reduces the Carbon usage by 1/3.

Some years back, Car and Driver ran a column comparing energy requirements for various forms of transportation. The writer tried to factor in manufacture of equipment, production and distribution of the forms of energy, and some other things that are often ignored in similar comparisons. I wish I had saved a copy.
The most efficient method of moving something from point A to point B turned out to be steel wheels running on steel rails, powered by a diesel-electric hybrid.
It makes sense that diesel-electric hybrid vehicles would also be highly efficient for moving people where the rails don’t go.
I agree... $600 for just a ten minute sensor change. I am in the industry and that pisses me off. That kind of greed makes us all look bad.
Not talking about it because it will sink the big lie about EV’s.
A former top exec/engineer of major utility (no, looked and can’t find it) wrote several years ago that if our nation goes 5% of its vehicles EV’s, the nation’s grid will collapse. And there is not enough generating capacity to handle charging all these vehicles - even if after peak hours. Musk has also said this, but almost no one hears him on this.
When we reach about 5% (no one knows what real number is) EV’s, the only solution will be rotating power black-outs. Like in Venezuela, Nicaragua, 3rd world countries.
And full life-cycle costs of EV’s are far above gas & diesel vehicles.......total battery costs & disposal issues we have yet to see.....
All part of the big lie.
