Russian President Vladimir Putin has said he will request talks with NATO to ensure that the US-led military bloc does not creep closer to his country's borders, as Kiev moves to allow Western troops into Ukraine. Speaking to a group of newly-arrived ambassadors in the Kremlin on Wednesday, Putin said that his country will “insist on guarantees being set out to exclude the possibility of NATO moving any further to the east, and deploying threatening weapons close to Russian territory.”
“I would like to emphasize that we need these to be legal guarantees,” the Russian president said, “given that our Western colleagues have not fulfilled their respective oral obligations. Everyone knows they made promises they wouldn't expand eastwards, but then they did the opposite. Legitimate Russian security concerns have been ignored and continue to be ignored.”

Crimea river Vlad. Are you Ossetia your butt over your illegal, ill-gotten gains?
I guess a few mean Tweets are the price of sane foreign policy and an actual energy policy among other important things. Mean Tweets. Really. That’s how the world dies. Sure, why not?
How would we react to the Russians moving their soldiers to Cuba?
“given that our Western colleagues have not fulfilled their respective oral obligations.”
I do not want to, and I wish I did not have to agree with Vlad.
“How would we react to the Chinese moving their soldiers to Cuba?”
Today ? I don’t even want to know.
I imagine that Biden would tell us a story about Cornpop or something. Actually, I think that senile old crook will start angling for war with somebody/anybody to try and save his regime. Well, the people in charge will; he doesn’t run anything.
Good hire by the Gators! Really good hire by LSU. Wow.
“that senile old crook will start angling for war with somebody”
You assume he is in charge.
He’s not. He’s an actor and not a very good one. Obama at least read his lines a little better most of the time.
Depends. Does the Big Guy get his 10%?
My take is that obozo isn’t in charge, either. He and “big Mike” got their payoff and are kicking back in the mansions.
“Good hire by the Gators! Really good hire by LSU. Wow.“
Who?
They hired Putin?
C’mon, man! They hired Bill Napier. As much as I want to heckle them, I really can’t. At least not yet. I think he’s a great hire. I thought he would go to LSU, but they went a different direction and did really well, too.
“How would we react to the Russians moving their soldiers to Cuba?
dfwgator,
You are asking a very relevant question.
Russia will fight harder for their regional position in the Ukraine then the US or NATO. This goes back to the Kievan Rus period which Russia, Ukraine, & Belarus all claim as their historic ancestors.
Warmonger Republicans have never been in a weaker position politically then they are now. They pissed away their “war hawk” political capital over weak Muslim oriented countries.
These warmongers have zero sympathy from me. Look at Lindsey Graham and Liz Cheney, these 2 idiots would have American troops in 180 countries if left to their own devices. Their foreign policy is simplistic and stupid:
“If we invade a country we have to keep troops in “there forever” or the “enemy” will fill the vacuum” when we leave.
The foreign policy of the United States should be commerce not warfare.
“tell us a story about Cornpop or something”
Imagine if Trump told a story like that. There would be swarms of reporters out searching for Cornpop to prove the story was a lie.
A friendly reminder that president Bush told Gorbachev that once united Germany joined NATO that no more nations would join the alliance after that, pinky promise
Same arguments tin-pot dictators always use. We HAVE to have SPACE! DONTCHA KNOW! Like Hitler and his Lebensraum. When that fails, they declare that the subjugated actually wanted it. Like Austria. Like Czechoslovakia. And when that fails, they just take it cuz they HAD no choice because it was going to be a failed state anyway (which they usually cause) and they had to prevent it.
Not always a fan of Kissinger but one of his spot-on quotes was “Russia is always expanding or contracting. It cannot exist in stasis.”
Putin is an authoritarian oligarch crook at best, and a potential bestial dictator at worst. He thankfully doesn’t have the power as Russia is not as strong as it once was.
Mind you, I’m not a huge fan of NATO’s expansion but truly, what threat does it pose to Russia? It is supposed to be merely a self-defense pact. When one is attacked, the others go to the aid of the victim.
And lets remember that NATO’s track record is not great at even that. It is not the boogeyman some make it out to be.
And if I remember correctly, Russia was considered and offered admission to NATO at some point. I think it was discussed and proposed during Dubya’s reign.
Russia doesn’t want any of this. It just wants to be a “big power” and will spend itself into poverty to try to pretend to be one.
“I do not want to, and I wish I did not have to agree with Vlad.”
Our State Department should’ve “cut a deal” with Russia 30
years ago. From 1922-1991 the Soviet Union was a Marxist State that was hard to negotiate with because of ideology.
Post 1991 the Kremlin became more pragmatic about “making deals,” unfortunately we are now the uncompromising ideological country.
We’re a disgusting “Woke Country” now. Who shouldn’t be lecturing anybody on anything.
P.S. Our State Department is on a diplomatic suicide mission as they lay the “ground work” for warfare with China, Russia, and Persia.
The next 20 years are “going to be wild.”
How many bases does the US have around the world? Now how many bases does russia have outside it’s borders?
