While arranging travel for senior Air Force officials, a Maryland man bought a baby grand piano, a Harley-Davidson motorcycle, and pricey family vacations — all paid for with cash advances from a government credit card.
Eddie Ray Johnson Jr., 60, of Brandywine, Maryland, was sentenced to 16 months in federal prison Monday, Nov. 29, after pleading guilty to charges of theft of government property that totaled at least $1,157,540.69 — the amount he was also ordered to repay.
Johnson spent 15 years working for the Air Force as a civilian, most recently as a travel coordinator in the secretary of the Air Force’s Office of Legislative Liaison where he planned congressional travel and approved accounting packages, according to the Department of Justice. That position allowed him to pocket more than $1.1 million in cash advances from a government-issued credit card between 2014 and 2017.

Sure let’s give the government trillions more to spend...
They’re so good with our money!
When I was in the MDNG one time I had to run down to Richmond, they gave me a Govt. Credit card that was 1$ less than a million to use just in case I needed it.
I wasn’t tempted at all, just saying...
Oh wow. That’s soooo much credit.
Well, he forgot that he can only do that is he’s bringing in a significant number of votes in key districts.
Don’t leave home without it.
Don’t leave home without it.

Don’t buy a home without it.
10% to the big guy?
This is a classic example of the government trying (in theory) to do the right thing and getting bitten in the ass for it.
Many many years ago, procurement was so complicated and cumbersome and time consuming, the idea was just to provide credit cards for small dollar purchases to speed things up. Simple and makes sense.
Unfortunately, no one is doing audits on the back end to make sure this kind of activity isn’t taking place. Even when the government tries to do the right thing, its incapable of executing.
Eddie Ray got greedy. If he filched only 10k or so, they wouldn’t have cared.
This guy is an amateur compared to our Republican Representatives and Senators!
Had a Government CC for a short while when I was in. I was scared to use it for anything! Got rid of it as soon as I could.
In reality, he did a better job of spending our tax dollars than the government generally does. He actually got something out of it.
Sure is hard to find a single photo of Eddie Ray Johnson Jr. Must be a protected species.
I know people who are afraid to stop for a coffee when they are driving a government car, then there’s this guy.
16 months in a federal camp in return for 1.1 million? Not a bad deal.
🎯
The Navy requires you to have a goverment CC for travel, and to use it for everything if you want to be reimbursed.
Used to be you pay for things, keep receipts, and submit them when you’re done with TDY. Not now.
I think there was probably some sweet contracting done with the banks somewhere.
I had one for about 20 years (after the DoD cut ties with Diners Club) while TDY in Barranquilla, Colombia and had to spend about ten bucks to call Visa and get them to increase my cash advance limit. The Colombian NCO club at Barranquilla Naval Station, where we were billeted, only took cash. I called to explain and it took me several tries to get the lady to understand that I was in COLOMBIA, South America, not Columbia, South Carolina. Oy...
Found Eddie R. Johnson Jr. in Brandywine on Facebook. Only pic is a light-skinned boy.
