You can find this fun quotation puzzle, to combat early dementia and senility in us baby boomers, in several daily publications. I challenge us with the best ones out there.

The way it works is a letter stands for another letter. For example: AXYDLBAAXR is LONGFELLOW (does not apply to today's cryptogram).

Beware, the game is very addictive. If this is your first time, don't be intimidated, you’ll be solving them all within a few days.  If you’re stumped, take a break and return to it.

PLEASE DO NOT post the answer in general comments, but DO post your time and how you made out.

You can certainly send your solution to my private reply, or if you need a hint for today’s Cryptogram ASK THE GROUP FOR HELP!

I suggest printing these out and work them on paper. If you need a little help you can copy and paste it to Hal’s Helper below.

You can then work on the puzzle without using pen and paper, but I recommend that you do NOT look at the letter counter.

   HAL'S CRYPTOGRAM HELPER

One last request. Feel free to post a fun or clever clue, the more tangential to the quotation the better, but please don’t put the actual words of the quote in the clue.

3 minutes excellent
2 minutes exceptional
90 seconds superior

Also by this author:

A man sees in the world what he carries in his heart.

You can easily judge the character of a man by how he treats those who can do nothing for him.

Daring ideas are like chessmen moved forward. They may be beaten, but they may start a winning game.

Enjoy when you can, and endure when you must.

Courage is the commitment to begin without any guarantee of success.

About three minutes -- lots of letters.

I started with the one-letter word, and then the most common letter. Then I found the most common word, which got me the last name of the author and the rest of the puzzle.

I should have said lots of one-use letters.

Less than a minute. Got the first word which gave the author.

I love these longer quotes and how they seem to solve themselves once you get one or two words. The first word was the key, then guessing what the 3-letter word in author’s name had to be, and the last 3 letters of the name being the same as that first word. Then everything opened up just like a book.

Recognized the author at a glance, which left only a few letters to fill in.

2:02.98 First word is the obvious choice. Picking away gives you the author. It’s a Faustian bargain.

Those are nice quotes.

Panicked when I saw the author had such a lonnnnng name. I’m not good at remembering names. CG starts and ends with the same letters which solved the author first for me. YAY! The rest just fell into place.
