Natural COVID-19 infections protect against SARS-COV-2, gamma and delta variants, says study

Natural infection with COVID-19 offered protection from reinfection when the gamma and delta variants predominated, according to a new University of Michigan study that also provides levels of antibodies needed to protect against reinfections.

According to the study, which took place in a community setting in Nicaragua, having infection-induced antibodies provided 69% protection against infection and 79% protection against moderate or severe illnesses. The study showed that second infections were less severe than first infections.

"The course of the pandemic will be determined by the quality and durability of the protective immunity offered by both natural infection and vaccination," said Hannah Maier, a postdoctoral research fellow at U-M's School of Public Health and lead author of the report. "We hope having an immune correlate of infection-induced protection and a better understanding of the severity of second infections will inform vaccine policy and help guide targeting at-risk populations and other mitigation strategies."

Researchers found that 62% of the cohort was seropositive for SARS-CoV-2 in March 2021 prior to a large second wave of COVID-19, with gamma and delta variants predominating. The researchers determined the antibody levels needed to prevent infection, illness, and moderate or severe disease. The levels needed for protection against moderate or severe disease were lower than the levels needed to prevent infection.

Aubree Gordon, senior author of the paper, said while second infections were somewhat less severe, they were not as mild as they had hoped for and that a strategy involving vaccination will be needed to ease the burden of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic.

This should have been the assumption from the outset. It is anti-science to refuse to abstract what is known from decades of medical research and practice.

I took two jabs, then my daughter who lives with me got covid. Her symptoms were mild and I never got sick. Do I have natural immunity or some other kind? Or is the coming covid going to kill me? Not taking any more shots.

I got the Moderna vax from the VA and got the Delta variant along with my wife who received no shots. There are too many credible stories about immediate vaccine deaths, loss of natural immunity, and long-term health consequences for either of us to get the shots in the future. We will rely on natural immunity and guidelines for self-treatment we found on the internet

Meanwhile, health systems continue to get rid of the employees with superior immunity.

The problem with not taking more shots, is that the first two will leave your system unprotected after about six months. Unless there is a way to detox from he first two shots, you may really need the booster. That is something your going to have to figure out on your own, since most of the misinformation is coming from the CDC and our government.

Per the study,

"having infection-induced antibodies provided 69% protection against infection"

(better than the vacs are doing against Delta)

"and 79% protection against moderate or severe illnesses."

(poorer than the vacs are doing against Delta, at least in the 1st few months after vaccination.)

A great deal of crucial detail is not given in the article, such as WHEN first infections occurred. So, I can only give a very rough guess that naturally acquired immunity is about twice as good as two shots of vaccine immunity. Of course, we have a large contingent of FReepers who insist the vaccines are worthless in protecting against COVID. Twice "worthless" would not be much to crow about...
