It would only require one or two results this weekend – none of them farfetched – for Notre Dame to reach the College Football Playoff for the third time in four seasons, including each of the past two.
Maybe Georgia blows out Alabama. Maybe Baylor or Iowa beat Oklahoma State or Michigan. Maybe Cincinnati stumbles. That’s it. That’s all it would take.
If it happens, Notre Dame will compete once again in the playoff … only this time without its head coach.
It is the latest example of a sport gone mad – with money, with realignment, with championship aspirations, with deception and ego, and power plays and who knows what other good soap opera stuff. Whatever it is, know this: Brian Kelly is expected to leave Notre Dame after 12 seasons to take over a rebuilding project at LSU.

I like our new coach, Napier is the kind of coach Florida has needed since Meyer left, the CEO type who focuses on recruiting.
College football is big business, it’s all about the money. Pretty sure players can cash in now. Money, money, money.
If you don’t like it, don’t watch, go to games, buy their stuff.
I am hearing LSU might still be in some hot water with the NCAA, and that scared some of the coaches off. Apparently Napier didn’t even consider them at all.
The big problem is the early signing period in December. Schools that lose a coach are desperate to hire someone quickly so recruiting doesn’t suffer. When there was only one signing period in February, schools could take their time a little more. Notre Dame’s best choice might be Luke Fickell at Cincinnati, but if they make the CFP, can Notre Dame wait?
Still, I think the NCAA should consider some kind of spending cap, or else it’s going to drive out a lot of schools from college football. It’s essentially going to create an environment where it will be the same teams every year competiting in the playoffs.
Cincinnati must be getting tired of being the farm system for future ND coaches.
I can't disagree.
Meanwhile at Penn State, they are paying their coach $7 million a year for a 7-5 record.
He is the worst game day coach in the history of the NCAA. But he sure knows how to sell used cars!
I thought about that. He has a “colorful” past. That being said the temptation will be great for any school. N.D. Included.
It is well known he has always wanted that job.
Can we can the crap about “Student athletes” and just acknowledge that these programs are just cash cows for the schools? Only in America do we have this asinine charade about “amateur” sports that are really just highly profitable minor leagues for the NFL and NBA.
And by the way, where did Urban play in college? Cincinnati, of course.
It’s basically the NFL Farm System.
UConn just hired Jim Mora, ex UCLA and NFL coach of the Saints. He’s getting some great assistants, too.
Not a new thing fat Bret Bielama who left Wisconsin prior to their appearance in Rose Bowl after 2012 season. Bielema’s departure was a shock, coming just three days after Wisconsin earned a school-record third straight trip to the Rose Bowl
I will be interesting to see if Notre Dame makes it to the Final Four if Cincinatti beats #16 Houston on Saturday.
These crazy salaries are all worth it quite frankly. This is a huge business and as a country we love it. I am guessing the salary bubble may burst eventually.
I really like the Kansas coach, they only won two games, but you can tell right away the impact he’s having on their program. They will get better.
I always say not to worry about a coach’s won-loss record his first year. I think Saban’s first year at Bama he had a losing record, and even lost at home to Louisiana-Monroe.
Yes. Also a strong Catholic heritage at U.C.
Meyer being a Catholic, and Toledo born doesn’t hurt either.
Strong presence in that region for recruiting.
I think Oklahoma State should be in over Notre Dame.
Which is why I support the players getting paid as much as they can and have free agency. If they want to play for 4 different schools in 4 years, so what?
