Why Many Who Must Work on Holidays Say it Can Be Rewarding

Many people are enjoying some time off this week for Thanksgiving, but others are still hard at work. First responders, nurses, hotel employees and gas station attendants are just a few.

“I’m happy I’m alive and might be able to help and be here,” Tom Arnold said.

Arnold, who works at Go Go Gas in Essex Junction, says he’s grateful to be there, even on Thanksgiving.

“I’m grateful for my health and what I’m able to do, sure. I’m 79 years old and I enjoy working,” he said.

Like Arnold, Karen Norful, a front desk agent at the DoubleTree by Hilton in South Burlington, says she likes to stay busy.

“I have a Thanksgiving meal waiting for me I prepared yesterday, getting out at a reasonable time, and everyone else coming in is in good spirits, as well,” Norful said.

First responders are also on the clock, keeping people safe and doing their best to get in the holiday spirit.

“We usually bring our whole shift together and cook a big meal and bring our families in to have dinner with us,” South Burlington Fire Capt. Micah Genzlinger said.

Genzlinger says a lot of community members stop by to say thanks on holidays. He says he’s grateful for them and everyone else showing their support.

“I’m grateful to have a supportive family, you know, my wife and son understand this is my job. And I’m thankful for the members I work with on a daily basis,” Genzlinger said.

“Just happy to be here,” Norful said. “And I’m grateful for everyone in my life right now and Happy Thanksgiving to everyone else today that has to work, as well.”

Like many of us at WCAX who wish you a Happy Thanksgiving, too.

Would not want to be working for the Salvation Army right now.

I was at work in my hospitals ER today.

It was pretty quiet. Boring actually.

I’ve worked so many holidays and Holy Days as well I can’t even count...but being with fellow nurses and drs and associated crew is fun in a way....we do have great camaraderie, something that many places of work would only dream of....

I agree. The nurses had a huge spread. I was stuffed by the end of the night.

I’ve mostly been a shift worker most of my life. I’m used to working holidays. I don’t mind them. Usually pretty quiet.

Hubby worked his restaurant job today. He brought home over $600, so it’s definitely usually worth it to work holidays.

I work as a greeter part time at local Waffle House. I work all holidays also. We are usually packed (especially on Thanksgiving) but it was very slow today. I got off 2 hrs early. Right before I left a regular left a $100 tip and asked that it be split for all employees working...so I got a $10 tip...woohoo My position can accept tips but I rarely get them as I wear a uniform that makes a lot assume that I am the mgr...lol

I used to do a lot of the Christmas and Thanksgiving cover back in public TV land mostly because I wanted days off when things were open.

The typical light day was very light, almost a day off in itself.

My sister was a waitress and bartender all her working life. She would always go out of her way to work holidays, especially Christmas, because of the tips then.

I worked retail for a short time. At one point, people were lobbying to give retail workers off on holidays. They didn’t seem to understand that most of us wanted to work holidays because we were paid time-and-a-half. My store had a signup sheet to work on Thanksgiving, and it was filled before I got to it. I worked holidays for many years at other jobs.

One of my kids works at NASA. He’s on call this weekend. He enjoyed a hearty Thanksgiving pizza and a long zoom call with his siblings.

In other words, a perfect day.

Being self employed, I enjoy working a few hours on the holidays. I can get more done in four hours on Thanksgiving than twelve hours on a regular weekday.

Not everyone wants to hang out with the relatives all day.
