A male gray wolf known as OR-93 was killed after being hit by a vehicle off Interstate 5 near Lebec on Nov. 10, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife announced Wednesday.
OR-93 was born in northern Oregon in 2019. His travel has been closely monitored since federal wildlife officials fitted the young wolf with a purple tracking collar in June 2020.
The wolf was first tracked in California on Jan. 30, 2021. OR-93 briefly returned to Oregon before reentering California to begin his trek south.
The wolf traveled hundreds of miles and was tracked in various regions of the state. The wolf entered San Benito County in late March 2020 and entered Monterey County on April 1. OR-93's last collar transmission was in San Luis Obispo County on April 5.
According to the Center for Biological Diversity, no wolf has been documented in the central valley or coastal counties for 200 to 300 years.
"I'm devastated to learn of the death of this remarkable wolf, whose epic travels across California inspired the world," said Amaroq Weiss, senior wolf advocate at the Center for Biological Diversity. "In this annual time of reflection, I thank him for the hope he gave us and for a brief glimpse into what it would be like for wolves to roam wild and free again."
OR-93 traveled the farthest south in California than any gray wolf has been documented since one was captured in San Bernardino County in 1922, state wildlife officials said.
They built a culvert near me recently for animals to go under the highway.
He turned down Hillary and Pelosi.....
Prolly find some female bitches....I’d gather.
But what If he was looking for another male wolf to mate with? I mean, it is California after all.
... whose epic travels across California inspired the world," said Amaroq Weiss, senior wolf advocate at the Center for Biological Diversity.
Yeah, I am so "inspired" that I howl a the moon all the time now.
Climate change prevents a more precise calculation.
They might’ve been with him. He was probably the only one collared in his pack. Or he was a lone/disperser wolf looking for a mate and territory to start his own pack.
Lone wolf: I don’t need no steenkin’ pack.

Reminds me of the woman (N.D.. native? Fargo? ) who called the radio station to complain the deer weren’t crossing the roads where the deer crossing warning signs were posted. She was mad she almost hit one that wasn’t near one of the signs..
She was well-intentioned but probably not marriage material.
They actually have animal overpasses where they can cross highways to minimize car strikes. Not to say an intelligent predator won't be waiting the other side! LOL
I thought I could outrun a deer that was running alongside the road. I was going about 30 mph and the deer came up from behind and was gaining on me. I didn't really have a choice because there were cars behind me and none of us would be able to stop short. But the deer kept running faster and faster and then leapt out into the road. The deer couldn't reason or calculate what was likely to happen. Fortunately I didn't hit him head-on. He only took out a headlight and crumpled a little metal, but it was a scary experience. I guess I came out of it better than the deer did.
If they gave the job to the NSA the wolf might still be alive.
OMG someone else knows who Im talking about. And she was well intentioned but extremely clueless about deer habits and the fact deer dont look for the signs before crossing a road
