OPINION: An Atlanta neighborhood becomes a food desert overnight
The Atlanta Journal Constitution ^ | November 17, 2021 | Nedra Rhone

he unmarked security vehicles parked outside the Kroger signaled trouble. So, too, did the police tape blocking the store’s entrance at Metropolitan Parkway SW and Cleveland Avenue SW several days ago. A small sign taped to an overturned shopping cart flapped in the wind telling shoppers the power was out. Thieves had stolen critical electric wiring.

A much larger sign said “Temporarily Closed” and identified two other store locations for shoppers in the area, neither of which was easily accessible without some form of transportation.

After one Hapeville resident recently found Kroger’s doors locked, she lamented on social media that there was no grocery store in the community for people like her who do not own a car. Now she would have to rely on rideshare apps for shopping trips.

Outstanding citizens saw fit to destroy a grocery store’s electrical system. That means all the refrigerated perishable food is no longer salable.

There are deeper systemic problems here. The community’s are not concerned because the schools have taught them not to be concerned, instead they have been taught to play victims.

Law enforcement and justice systems have failed due to pandering political leadership.

Public transport has failed for the same reasons.

Just to name a few of the problems.

They should stop robbing/shoplifting and this won’t be a problem.

Thank you for that compliment.

We are past the time to be thoughtful and patient. Most of us just don’t know it yet.

It is certainly a problem, and not just in the black communities. In others as well.

And I agree. That is sad indeed.

People who pay attention like you and I can see the root of the problem.

There are those who desperately do not want the root of the problem to be acknowledged or discussed.

“and not just in the black communities”

I don’t necessarily disagree with that however if you look at it from a % of total number of people from a particular group I fear blacks are in a lot worse shape.

Part of my church prison ministry is to provide mothers day and fathers day cards to the men to send to their moms and dads. We have a hard time supplying enough cards for mothers day.....on fathers day we always get
At least 50% of the cards returned to us.

Very telling IMO.

The writer of this article has a degree in Journalism from Columbia. But can’t (or doesn’t want) to see the forest for the trees.

Did she go to college to get stupid? Or did she attend to get politically indoctrinated and be able to have an air of credibility with her degree? If this is what Columbia produces for journalists, I would not assign a high value on a degree from such a place.

Its really simple logic, people don’t open stores in places where their stuff is getting stolen. Or their stores are more likely to get looted and destroyed in a riot.

She then goes into the idea that we need more government subsidies to help provide food. Nice try at that segue.

Crap articles like this are one of many reasons why I would never subscribe to a paper like the Atlanta Journal and Constitution.
