OPINION: An Atlanta neighborhood becomes a food desert overnight
The Atlanta Journal Constitution ^ | November 17, 2021 | Nedra Rhone

he unmarked security vehicles parked outside the Kroger signaled trouble. So, too, did the police tape blocking the store’s entrance at Metropolitan Parkway SW and Cleveland Avenue SW several days ago. A small sign taped to an overturned shopping cart flapped in the wind telling shoppers the power was out. Thieves had stolen critical electric wiring.

A much larger sign said “Temporarily Closed” and identified two other store locations for shoppers in the area, neither of which was easily accessible without some form of transportation.

After one Hapeville resident recently found Kroger’s doors locked, she lamented on social media that there was no grocery store in the community for people like her who do not own a car. Now she would have to rely on rideshare apps for shopping trips.

Hapeville is right near the Airport. A place you never go unless forced to fly in or out of Atlanta.

Change will never come to these cities....democrats control the elections that is why people do not vote...they have no one else to vote for..

“I have 7 kids and depend on Kroger”

I will always believe many issues within the black community in this country are rooted in the lack of traditional nuclear family.

7 kids? A good chance this is a female with no husband to support ‘em all. Sad.

I lived in Atlanta in the 70’s. There was a law that all streets must be named Peachtree Street.

I wish she would read the comments here. If she really wants to help that community, some very hard realities need to be explained. As in, shut up and listen. As in, stop the claims of racism - this is on YOU. . There needs to be some actions taken and behaviors changed within the community itself. Actions that require hard work and person discipline.

Throwing money at this, crying racism, altering the normal rule of law, etc is not the answer.

I wish I wrote and expressed myself as well as you just did.

I used maybe my first 10 years here on FR, but I’ve grown old and impatient. Pushing 60, I just don’t have it in me much anymore to be as thoughtful and patient as I used to.

I also have little to no patience for people such as those in this article who don’t see themselves and their actions (voting) as being responsible for the situation they’re in.

Black “culture” driving broken families, crime, drugs, abortion as birth control and a complete lack of respect for the beauty and sanctity of human life. The inner cities are today’s Sodom and Gomorrah. They are living the consequences of their actions and there are none so blind as those who refuse to see.

Respectfully,

USC

Then fix your communities.

Also, no one wants to work in a high crime zone. It’s too dangerous.

We are living in atlas shrugged.

I enjoyed the book. Didn’t fully appreciate at the time that it was prophecy. Along with 1984, Animal Farm and Fahrenheit 451.

She knows. But to write that type of article she has to pretend she doesn’t know.

I bet they have a higher rate of single parent families than 95+% of the neighborhoods in America, too.

I'll raise you one. I bet they have a higher rate of single parent 'families' with multiple unrelated absentee male genetic sources for the children.

Back in the 90s I had a black supervisor who had occasion to take disciplinary action on a black female in my department. After he completed the disciplinary action she went around calling him a racist for weeks....a black woman accusing a black man of being racist.....it was at that point I realized that a black accusing anyone of racism is nothing more than an attempt to gain leverage and secure a particular outcome in any given situation.

That word and accusation has meant nothing to me since.

A grocery store across the street is a constitutional right. Right?

I also notice the author slid in the term “red-lining” because...racism or something.
